Test to obtain FDW?

Post by in8mom » Sat, 09 Feb 2008 10:45 pm

I walked into an agency on a whim and was told that I needed to take a course and receive "certification" before I could employ a maid. Just wondering if this is standard.

Also, how does one choose one agency over another? I was asked a few questions but I didn't even know how to answer them! Gosh I felt like such a newbie!

all first time employers of FDW (foreign domestic workers) have to take a course. you can do it online: http://cec.sp.edu.sg/webapps/login/

the agencies i've heard about most from friends are: prestige, 121 personnel, apac and aatas.

Another thing I was wondering about.. Is there a benefit to who employs the FDW? ie: husband or wife?

when we originally brought our helper over from indonesia we filled out all the paperwork with my husband as the employer - but i was able to provide the certificate proving i'd taken the test. (?) i seem to remember there being a lot of paperwork (namely b/c i did it myself - and also we needed to prove that she'd been with us for a # of years, tax info...etc). i'm not sure there is a benefit for one or the other being the employer - but i think you do need to provide the tax info so might have to be done with whomever holds the work permit. also worthwhile to check the classifieds on this forum as well as boards any of the clubs, supermarkets for a helper.

So no real benefit to one over the other really then?

It is normally the person who has the employment pass or whatever who is considered the employer. Only for red tape purposes really.

I am the one who she treats as the "boss" at home but my husband did all the paperwork and went for the course. That was a bit of a laugh since we have had a helper for years beforehand, just not here in Singapore. However it does open your eyes to the things that other people might consider the norm for a maid/helper to do, also sort of helpful if you are new to it as well, about thinking about what the maid/helper may or may not know depending on how experienced they are.
