Summer 2008!

Post by Brian Boru » Wed, 06 Feb 2008 7:47 am

Hey guys!
I'm an Irish student who is planning to spend the summer in Singapore and is hoping to get some sort of job in the event that I won't be taken on by a firm as an intern.
What kind of work can I expect to easily get? What are the wages like and do many foreign students travel there for the summer?
All advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Not to be too blunt, but forget about it: casual work is virtually impossible to obtain if you don't have residence in Singapore. So better concentrate on those internships and hedge your bets for applications...

Right... :( Oh well, cheers for the honesty :)

I presume by residency you mean native Singaporian, with an address there, and therefore an Irish dude who is staying with a family there would not apply.

Are you familiar with any Singaporian firms who hire a significant number of Europeans?

Also, I will be staying in Singapore for the month of June regardless. Are there many Irish expats? I see you have a number of Irish pubs, but that is not always an indication of the presence of Irish nationals.

most companies take intern or fresh graduate from the local universities or colleages. they can be local or foreign students (in the local uni) as well. there's no harm in apply but your chances are slim.

there are a lot of foreigners in singapore, not just irish. just enjoy the singapore culture and local experience.

Much appreciated! Did you get the email I sent you? What pub are you in that we can go for, what we would term here, as a scatter of pints?

I did get your e-mail...I'm just rubbish at e-mailling people back...i like to let an e-mail sit there for two or three days before i respond to it... Jaysis, i don't know if i'm even allowed say the name of my pub up here...could be conidered to be advertising... hopefully now the moderators will have mercy and not savage my post. I'm managing the Toucan Irish pub on Duxton hill (THE BEST GOD DAMN IRISH PUB ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET)... heh heh, that's just for the moderators.

Ah, sorry then, I haven't been online since! I've actually secured a job, but sure I'll most certainly be up for pints over the summer. Legend! Fair play!
