Singapore Expats

Hi,

I just feel that I should follow up my postings made before I moved down here.

Now we have been in Singapore in 1 month things has turned out to meet and exceed all my expectations.

When looking at the areas we put prio on:

1) a condo close to a MRT
2) a good pool area
3) good play ground and safe to let the kids run around in the area.
4) close to a supermarket
5) Parks and greenery for nice walks
6) a library to go and visit
7) nice BBQ area
8) Putting green at condo
9) Driving range within walkable distance

Of course the condo should offer internet and cable tv.

I recon that living in Dover would have been a nice experience but since my wife doesn't have a car and riding taxis at all times is not really safe with kids we think the MRT is a lot better solution and with the 70 step stairs to the Dover MRT it was really bothering us.

We found the Guilin view condo with a lake &mountain view here in the west and to us.... It's bulls eye! It actually has fullfilled all my criterias.

We have just been so fortunate and this will make the time here in Singapore a treat.

Since i work in TUAS we wanted a location in the west

how about the local food? getting used to the chillies?

In fact I love the Chillies!

The kids don´t ....

This was the battle I was not really prepared to!

All food is present here in Singapore but in fact to find out WHAT products the kids fancy took us a couple of weeks to figure out.

So moving here with kids (my boys 2&5 years old) you should be prepared that the kids might be on an unvoluntary diet a week or two where mcdonalds turned out to be a savior.

Now we found some places where you can pick up western food and here in the Bukit Gombak area we have found that Delifrance is provides an excellent choice. At the Railway mall is a deli with an Italian chef that provides dishes that is a treat!

Another food issue is how to stock up on supplies the first weeks. Doing this without a car and using taxi & MRT turned out to be extremely time consuming. Then we found out that homedeliveries from the big supermarkets cost nothing and to get the bulk to your door is really the way to do it.

We signed up at www.coldstorage.com.sg but there is other chains out there. My collegues at work recomended this chain and I´m pleased.....

There are a few other grocery links in my links page as well, like NTUC, Cold Storage Group and such.

If you (or anyone else for that sake) need Scandinavian food then you can find it at below places:

Danish - "So Delicious" - 30 South Buena Vista Road, small shop with a good range of products.

Swedish - "Ikea" - heard the meatballs in their cafeteria should be good, also have a small shop with a few products.

Norwegian - "Norwegian Seamens Chuch" - 300 Pasir Panjang Road. Appearently they have a small shop with some basic products - never been there so not 100% sure.

There actually used to be a Danish restuarant called "Akvavit" but it closed down some while back. Crossing fingers someone will open something similar again soon....

The Norwegian/Swedish seamans church turned out to be a goldmine for the one longing for some good old scandinavian food.

After the service they had a barbaque with waffles and even Semlor! The little food shop even had REAL vanilla sauce.

Even though we eat local food most of the time there are some things that is just to good to be without.

The family service was very family oriented and it was a treat for the kids to play and talk native tung even just for a few hours.....

We can only RAVE about the IKEA meat balls and gravy.. Ohh dont forget to get your lingonberry jam also to go with it.

We drive almost 2 hours to go buy them each month from Melbourne. So its fantastic to know that they are at the Ikea in Singapore also.. I wont feel home sick for them when we relocate now.

next to little guilin is lianhua primary school which is my primary school
u can take a bus to the bukit batok interchange where u can take the bukit batok MRT to jurong east and go east towards the city area.

there will be an mrt going to tuas in the near future but now u are relegated to the PIE towards tuas.

now its time for u to explore sembawang, OBS school, nite ghost trips with www.spi.com.sg etc etc

There will be MRT connections to Tuas?

Ok, now I´m actually leaving for Sweden but sure this condo is nice.

That has been one the best things to come home to the poolarea every evening to play with my kids.

My five year old boy even started to swim! Damn that made me a proud father!!

Also spending time with all the nice families at the playground has made the kids start speaking english within only 6 months down here.

Really good things to bring with us back home.
