Sorry SMS, you've missed the point. The ship sailed. I wrote a measured, thoughtful response and you chose... well I don't know what you chose as it makes no sense to me. Give it a rest already.

I am pretty sure you don't have a reading comprehension problem so I fail to see how you could not understand my last post. However, based on the fact that you were not able to grasp a very basic analogy I will, as you say, let it rest.

OK, just wanted to say one thing.

I can see the reason for the admin to delete certain things mentioned in posts...certainly it is within their rights etc etc, but why not the common courtesy to at least say that it was edited by the board admin?

This never seems to happen here, things just disappear, both threads and posts, with no reasons given, and people are just left wondering what the hell just happened.

This surely is what is more upsetting to people than anything else.

You are saying: If YOU own a used car dealership but I bought a car from your competitor and liked the car then it's okay if I (a third party) come over to your used car lot in the night and post signs advertising your competitors products on your turf. Now have I got it straight?

:P
I guess what is puzzling here is that this is obviously not at all what Sprite was saying in their analogy. One post out of thousands and thousands doesn't seem to be analogous to the above comparison.

Micknlea, it does happen here (when notification is given): http://www.singaporeexpats.com/forum/ftopic47004.html

But I guess the scenario you describe also happens. It's shame because the intention was good, the information useful.

rnt,

Yes I do agree that your link is the way it should be done. Actually I did the one in your example. Plavt also does the same. Normally this is our procedure when editing a post. Having said that, I cannot speak for the other moderators nor admins. We do however generally just delete pure advertisers & spammers who do not have a history of normal posts here. Sometimes we get it wrong, most of the time we get is right (regardless of the protestation to the contrary (see the Beauty thread for lots of those).

No one wants to delete any posts but at the same time there is often a fine line between what is promoting and what is recommending something. In the case of real estate however it is a different kettle of fish. The reason my analogy doesn't agree with sprite's is that my analogy is based on the realities of why the recommendation of other real estate agencies is not allowed by the admins. If you look at it, it's the correct analogy even though to the reader it may look petty. That's the problem between brick & mortar sites and web sites. Both are businesses. Therein lies the whole point. The business owner who would allow my analogy to happen at their place of business would not stay in business long. Why would there be a difference between the two types of business models?

Resting.....

yeah but some of them were not missed, it got better here after that, I think that was before your time in this forum

anyway, funny that the place they went to soon deteriorated, it was like putting animals in a cage to watch them eat each other - I know, I posted there, only returned recently

now some of the same people who left here for there got sick of each other and left there too! cybergypsies.......

but the few people who are still there are good people

-------------------------------------------------------------------
it's true though, unannounced post-editing is heavy-handed, I too had a post edited that had advice about RE agents which I thought would be useful - this is a site for sharing information isn't it?

agree with micknlea, there could be more courtesy about the way it's handled

anyway there are other sites for more open communication

but I'm not pointing fingers and suppose if it's their site they have the ultimate say

BTW sprite SMS is as good a Mod you'll ever have, he's more than fair and I think gets caught between sometimes, see him for the good guy he really is

Good guy or not, sometimes his judgement comes down a little heavily. I'm not referring to his skills as a moderator, but just as a poster. Perhaps the moderators don't have a set procedure and that is why the cuts seem so arbitrary?

One thing that puzzles me about this forum: where are all the regulars? Most forums have a solid base of regulars. One wonders what's chasing them away?

well, you're talking to some of them in this very thread

many are like me, in for awhile, gone for awhile, this stuff can be a huge time waster

one reason I didn't post much in one of the other sites was because it turned out to be a lot of chatter with little content or of real value to me, this forum is better for sharing and getting info

plus as this is partly geared towards a foreigner community, these people tend to come and go from forums as they come and go from Singapore

sprite, yes, I am heavy-handed (I'm usually called ham-fisted). I've always written the way I see it. I don't have tact. Don't have time nor the energy for it. Usually those who complain are those who have been at the receiving end of one of my blunt explanations. If you feel done by, please accept my apologies. It wasn't meant as an affront to you, and it wasn't moderators that cut your post. The owner did.

We are all human here, even the moderators. As each and every one of us has said, many, many times here, when we moderate we usually sign off as Mod or moderator. The rest of the time we are posting in our personal capacities. SE is the voice of reason, I'm the abrasive one. JP is the holier than thou one, Baf is just Baf, Plavt is our UK resident mod and PhantomX is........well....we'll just not go there. But we all work for a living and during working hours and evening hours we spend inordinate amounts of time trying to keep the board cleared of garbage.

This board has a huge contingent of regulars. The problem is that many do not frequent the "general forum". This Site has 14 (count'em) forums and sub-forums. Some of the regulars have never leave some of their favourite forums here. Have a scroll through the Entertainment and Sports & Beauty forums. If they don't meet your idea of a regular (ie, posting in the General forum) you are welcome to your own thoughts. This board isn't number one in Singapore for nothing. And we got there after the above mentioned exodus. And yes I was here long, long before that whole episode. Actually all the mods were except for Plavt but he was a regular at the time as well.

We lose a few who feel that their idea of freedom has been impinged upon and quite often just as well. The loses are minor and often after visiting the other fare in Singapore they realize they were better off here and return. Probably a good 50% of those who left in August of '06 are back here again and some have been here for a while. (Some with their old nicks and other with new ones).

So, contrary to what you think, nobody is chasing anybody anywhere. If they go, they go because it's not their cup of tea. We've got a pretty solid base here. Sorry to disappoint... losing a few doesn't bother us in the least! :-|
