Things to do at chinese new year??

Can anyone tell me places to go, things to do at Chinese new year with my 10 yr old son?
My wife is going to the uk for 2 weeks, so it will be just me and the wee boy.
Is it really quiet? Are some shops open?
Any tips would be great.

try forest adventure at bedok resorvoir. lots of activities to do there. check out the website. heard it is open during the cny period.
