Where to buy inexpensive sarees for gift?

Post by jsaha » Tue, 22 Jan 2008 9:58 am

I'm a non-Indian and new to Singapore. My MIL is visiting from India and want to go to some store to get some sarees for her domestic helps and office helps as gifts. She recalls few years ago when she visited SG she came to this store named Satguru, somewhere near Peninsula Excelsior Hotel on Coleman Road. She found they have quite a few variety of sarees (cheap to expensive). She would like to go back, but I couldn't look up online. Has anyone heard or know where this place is? She said they also had some Japanese silks... not sure if she meant sarees made out of Japanese silks or just some Japanese silk items.

If not, do you have any store that you would suggest us to go? Please give me specific names/locations. Any quick replies would greatly appreciated. We are attempt to go t Excelsior hotel this evening and see if we can find the store. I would rather know where we are going :)

Just go to Little India and there are dozens of shops. Or go to Mustafa's at the top of Little India on Serangoon Road. Open 24 hours and has not only Sarees but anything else you want. Just tell the taxi driver little india or Mastafa's and they will know where to go.

Added to Little India and Mustafa, Arab Street is another place to find fabric. They can sew for you too, wiht very expensive charge.

Thank you the suggestions. We went back to Excelsior and asked around - found out the shop is no longer there, but was guided to a small store near there and my MIL managed to pick out a few Japanese chaffon/silk fabrics for sarees. The men who told us about this small shop also suggested us to go Arab street, but we didn't end up going as my MIL got what she needed for gifts at this shop. I'll venture out to Arab street one of these days just to see.
