Baby car seats

Post by mrwhite909 » Mon, 21 Jan 2008 10:40 pm

We have a 6month old boy and are moving over to Singapore and was wondering what is the deal with baby car seats?
Are there taxis that have them?
The advice from a Singaporean was "no need" obviously doesn't get the whole safety rationale for them.
If taxis do not have them can anyone provide advice on how to get around with the little one?

Hi. Taxis in Singapore are convenient and inexpensive but they certainly do not carry infant seats, and from experience are not exactly the safest of drivers, by European standards anyway! Don't mean to scare you - would advise using your own baby seat, perhaps the ones that fix on to a pushchair frame for getting about easily and safeley.

it is not easy to fit a car seat properly, let a lone fitting it in a taxi! so you waiting in a very long queue in a shopping mall at the taxi rank and it's your turn. you fit the car seat into the taxi which probably take a good 2-5 minutes, and all other people and taxi has to wait for you. i dont think the taxi driver will be happy either.

i know safety is important and i would defo recommend car seat if you got your own private car, but in a taxi would be a bit difficult. none of the taxi are equip with isofix. so you best bet is to put safety belt on you and hold your child firmly, facing forward.

I think it is the law that children in private cars must be restrained in proper child seats, like the laws in much of Europe, however i still do see kids climbing all over the inside if cars. Seems the police don't seem overly bothered either, though they stop cars for having exhausts that are 1/4 inch too big

Taxis are a different story.

It might be worth investing in one of those baby sling things that you wear. Then, when you are buckled in so is the little one. Not an ideal solution but possibly better than trying to hold the baby elephant in the event of a crash (this is the estimated weight of a child during a crash at 30mph).
