Middle-High schools

Post by brent » Thu, 10 Jan 2008 6:43 pm

I will be moving to singapore in July 08 and have a 13 year old daughter. She needs to join an IGCSE school. What are the recommended schools? I was looking at UWC but they informed me of a 100+ waiting list. Can someone tell me how is the Overseas Family School? How is it regarded/perceived. One of the top 3? Are there any other recommended IGCSE schools?

The growth of many businesses in Asia has been impacted by the shortage of places for their employees' children in good International Schools. Waitlists in good International Schools have sored.

UWC has addressed this shortfall by opening another campus in Tampines. With corporate sponsorship of employees' children who are relocating, UWC has been able to support businesses that are relocating staff to Singapore. Corporations can sponsor children of an employee by reserving a few places for guaranteed admission. The funds raised are going to contribute towards the new campus in Tampines that will open up over a thousand places for parents who have children on waitlists. What a great way to further the mission of UWC movement!

Is your employer willing to sponsor your child when you move to Singapore? If so, there is the option of corporate sponsorship route for admission.

The corporate sponsorship route is not open.
What do you think about OFS? How is the quality of teaching in Grade 9?

I have posted here before and you can check back if you like.
I can't vouch for Grade 9, but my child is in Grade 5, came from Scotland and struggled to keep up with OFS!
With positive help from the school and the teachers my child caught up and is very comfortable and the change in attitude from his attitude before we left Scotland is amazing.
Maybe the wealth of international friends and disciplined learning has opened his mind?
The sports facilities are ok.
The headmaster and most of the teachers I have met are extremely positive, but on the other hand I do know of people who left because their children were behind...and blamed the teachers.
Parents are encouraged to go into classes etc....something that does not happen in Scotland.
I was invited to teach a 1 Hour maths lesson (to show the kids maths used in the workplace) and it was an amazing experience.
They teach the IB programme.
We went to a few schools and my son chose OFS from the schools we visited and I have said before and will say again...his choice has proven to be the best one for him. He loves it, gets an education superior to that in Scotland, gets mates from all corners of the globe...we cant ask for much more than that.
There are rumours and stories at every school....but they are just that eh?
Above is what we have experienced...not rumour but fact.

thanks much Jockney. Really appreciate your time. I was kinda disheartned by the UWC waitlist! I liked OFS instinctively. They seemed to be more friendly. My daughter flowers under individual attention and that is what I am looking for in a school. Of course quality teaching is a given.
