Handheld/PDA help required urgently!! :???:

Post by solitude » Fri, 04 Jan 2008 1:37 am

Hey folks!

Can anyone help me with regards to this? I'm planning to buy a wifi-enabled handheld that is not too costly but can't seem to be able to decide which is for me. Any help or recommendation would be greatly appreciated!! (: I'm considering HP iPaq 4240 since the price factor is quite of satisfactory level *laughs* but still, would wanna hear from PDA users :) I don't need a handheld equipped with camera, but, would prefer it to have phone functions and not just a miniature laptop (:

Thanks in advance!
Cheers all~

Depends actually what you want to use it for......If its just the phone, get a smart phone, searching the internet is okay, abit slow...I have had the HP 2210 now for as long as i can remember...although its only a bluetooth connection, I have used it to surf.
I personally can do without, the most i use it for these days is my contact list...so its a little outdated...I have the Nokia 95, that can do everything and more...and even that I have never used more than a handful of times...prefering my old samsung... So to be honest, I would say keep your money, unless you are using it for business, and sports! It's like most things, the novelty wears off, once you have played around with gadgets...you just wait for the next! Commercialism is a killer! meaning I'll probably be dead, before they can manufactur anything i will be happy with...the technology is drawn out over many years...to get the $$$ for R&D, its like having a carrot in front of a donkey...we consumers are donkeys! Well not me, I took a reality check a long time ago....

I mean they could produce a super computer for our needs, and the infrastructure to use it, but whats the point? $$$$$$$ are all that matter in the eyes of the seller and they will say anything but the truth, to make a sale, I'm not saying they will tell lies though! The commercialised jungle , is a jungle! Take it easy out there!

how about a nokia E61 which is "blackberry" size or slightly bigger but still pocketable a nokia N880 (or the older version which will be cheaper, the N800 or 770).

i think at the end of the day, it is really what you want to use it for. i have used the nokia E61 (wifi) and blackberry 8800 (gprs/edge) to surf the net and it is terrible as the screen is so small! initially i thought it's so cool to surf the net within my palm but after a while, i got bored with the scrolling up/down and left/right.

another option could be the asus eee PC. small enuf to lug about and big enuf screen to do some serious surfing the net.

Hmm,

but is nokia e61 cheap? i don't want to drag my laptop everywhr i go! :(
it's kinda, bulky and heavy.
AND, I think I might need it in cases of emergencies (for example, undone homework) So probably, I think I'm going for a cheap, durable one with wifi-enabled.
Found one model HP iPaq rx 4240 selling at 200bucks (2nd-hand) but, unsure whether is it efficient. Checked out reviews on it but didn't seem to have much info on it...perhaps someone can tell me more about this model?

Anyone?? :???:

what are you going to do with wifi? think carefully what you want to acheive with a wifi device. a PDA will connect you to wifi but the usability is down to what you are surfing. remember most website are configured to at least 800 x 600 resolution. so what you see on a laptop is not gonna be the same on a PDA.

i have surf the net using both the E61 and 8800 and they are a pain. it's OK for something quick to check on but defo not for continuing surfing! maybe you want to consider getting a smaller lightweight laptop.

I often forgets about homework and ended up rushing home to complete them when I have 2 hours of free leisure time doing nothing in school, that's why I'm considering to buy a smaller device (smaller than a laptop).

Hmm, so if the pages are configured at 800 x 600, I can't view the page in it? Or I'm still able but have to do manual scrolling?

Anyways, I'm not gonna make it a multi-functional device. I'm just gonna use it for surfing, keeping tracks with assignments and deadlines, doing last-minute work, and organising my stuffs I think.

I'm not going for a PDA phone though, I heard most PDA phones don't really function well....

But anyways, I have my own satisfied phone already, hence, I'm not going to consider all the PDA phones. I think HP iPaq 4240 is just with the surfing capability..I don't think it can call out (:

You are much better off, with an older, smaller cheaper laptop, this will suit you, with a mobile processor on ebay.sg but be quick and don't send money, arrange to meet up, for testing....and take someone that knows a little bit about computers.

If you can contact them by mail and get a phone number, you may even get it cheaper!, There are not that many bidders on ebay. this is a 12 inch TFT monitor. 350$ would have been my max, although it is probably a retail outlet selling it, which is about the same price for a 12 inch i guess in SIngapore. Very much better than a PDA

eBay - IBMThinkPad T23

you defo eint gonna be doing homework or assignments on a PDA or handheld device. you will either get RSI or go blind! PDA and handheld are gimmicks for what you want to do. the idea is good but the theory is not!

get yourself an ultra small laptop like a toshiba portege range or ibm thinkpad x-series (x20 onwards). you will get more use and more work done with a laptop.

the smallest laptop i have used is a thinkpad 240x (10inch LCD) but dont think you can get them, even on the 2nd hand market. now i am using the excellent lenovo x61 (12inch LCD) which is still consider to be very small and lightweigh to lug about. very useful for wifi hopping :P

Well if I was you I would buy the EEEPC 7 inch on a 7 day trial basis, shop around, I noticed in Taiwan many school kids had them on a 7 day trial, so it should be possible, you will have to pay for it first I should think, make sure its 100% refund on return....PDA and phones for surfing are not great, and are really just over glorified organisers! Useful for some people.

Although if it is a PDA you want..check out the classifieds here on the forum!
