Shoppers at Wholefoods

Post by nytosg » Mon, 10 Dec 2007 9:28 pm

Just moved into Singapore and was not able to find quality organic food anywhere (including Cold Storage). CS does have a few things but not organic chicken fillets or extremely fresh fish (such as the Sockeye Salmon). Also organic fruits selection was very limited.

Anyone knows where to get a large selection of really fresh and good organic food?

Try Marketplace in the Basemen of Paragon Mall or Carrefour at Suntec City or Plaza Singapura. Maybe Jason's Supermarket as well on 1 Claymore Drive, in Orchard Towers.

Following is the text of a recently lost thread in the database corruption. It was taken from a Google Cache. At least the information is readable:

Does anyone know where i can find good organic skincare range in Singapore? Specifically, does anyone know if i can find The Organic Pharmacy products here in Singapore? I was using them in UK before i came to Sg. So far, the only place I came across selling organic skincare is the organic market at Tanglin Village. the guy sells some products from Germany and USA. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

You can get the Miessence range at the pharmacy on Level 1 (that's Ground Floor if you are British!) at Camden Medical Centre on Orchard Boulevard, just behind Tanglin Mall. I'm personally not that keen on some of the products I've tried, but know others that are happy with them.

Also in Tanglin Mall, go to Brown Rice Paradise on what I think is called Level 3, but is only up one level from street level where the taxi rank is.

Alternatively take a look at this site: http://www.essliv.com/ They deliver.

I've also tried a range called Lavera (I think it's now at a store in Raffles City basment extension) but got terribly burned when using their sunscreen, and didn't like the moisturiser, so won't be buying that again.

Have you looked at this site - you might find it useful: http://www.holisticliving.com.sg/index.php

Both the Vivo City and Orchard outlet of Tangs sell the Jurlique and Dr Houschka (sp?) ranges of organic skincare. I've tried the Laverna range and had no problems with it (including the sunscreen) but I dont have sensitive skin which may be an issue depending on the minerals/essential oils used. Jurlique does lovely stuff. Also check the Californian Baby range (Brown Rice at Tanglin Mall and I think Kids 21 at the Forum) which is very good. Aesop is available here at Ngee Ann City and possibly Millenia Walk - an all natural range which I really like but not organic.

I've just come across a new shop in novena sq2... and they sell a few range. One of which is The Organic Pharmacy from UK. I tried the products in the store and it feels pretty good. But has anyone used it before? Also, the shop sells a range called Logona which the store owner told me has been around in Germany for 25 years. I've seen the range when I was back in Europe. but again, i've not used it myself.

For adults, maybe Body Series could work for you. For kids, Sudzy is quite popular.

Organic Paradise at Temple Street, chinatown. They stock the largest array of organic beauty brands i have ever seen in SG. Definitely worth a visit if you only insist on using organic.

As i mentioned in another thread i know organic nuts who go there to buy like 3 months' supplies of beauty products to stock up.

Super Star - Thanks again. I'm actually looking for organic chicken fillets (Harvestland), extremely fresh and genuinely wild caught sockeye salmon, organic fruits and a larger variety of organic veggies (as compared to CS). I hope to be able to find them at the places you suggested.

SMS - Thanks. I will definitely check out the holistic link.

One of the more popular places with the Expat organic/gluten crowd is Brown Rice Paradise on the 3rd Floor of Tanglin Mall on Tanglin Road.

nytosg,

I checked, and unfortunately, Jason's and Marketplace doesn't have the chicken fillets or salmon you are looking for. You might like to still go down to both the supermarkets and look at their range of fruits and veggies though. Happy shopping :)

True. ('cept for old timers like me who use NTUC and no longer miss the things back home - except for triscuits!).

 I'd obviously had enough that day.

Salmon - my doc recently told me there is an expat woman calling herself "The Fishwife" (no comments on how a lot of us could be called that, please!). She brings in Salmon. I'll let you look her up. :)

Hey Mr Dreyfuss, if you can do your thing and find another thread I contributed to, keywords would be "Naturally Marketplace" "Vivocity".

Brown Rice Paradise, Supernature, Jason's, some place at Dempsey Road (now called Tanglin Village)...more and more organic/farmers' market type places are springing up.

Post subject: Where to go food shoppi for child with severe food allergies

Hi,

My family and I are moving from the US to Singapore next summer. We are going to house/condo hunt in a couple of weeks. Our son is 2 1/2 years old with severe food allergies. He is allergic to wheat, shellfish, soy, dairy, eggs and nuts. We have to carry an epipen wherever we go with him just in case......I am concerned about food shopping for him. More specifically, the detailed labeling of ingredients on food items. How reliable is the labeling on food items? Are there any good restaurants that support dietary restrictions? What are some pretty safe and reliable supermarkets to shop in? We taking the location of these "safe" food sources into consideration when we house hunt.

Thanks in advance!

cold storage and some of the other supermarkets carry the same stuff available abroad (so same labeling regulations), although the selection is of course narrower.

you'd probably have to bake your own bread. although Tanglin Mall carries gf-bread, they're quite expensive.

you won't find a big assortment of allergy-safe ready-made mixes, and eating out can be difficult, with such a range of allergies. my son has peanut, tree nuts and shellfish allergies (outgrew dairy and egg) and i'm in a permanent state of paranoia when we eat out. he drinks rice milk, available in cold storage (supermarket chain) and carrefour.

i'm not sure you should base your house-hunt on these specialized shops/restaurants, though. cold storage is everywhere, and singapore is just small, you can traverse the island in about an hour, so a weekly shopping run or occasional dinner out somewhere special shouldn't be too problematic.

Post subject: Some advice

I have gluten-free diet (which here in Singapore basically mean wheat-free since rye and barley are rarely used here). Here are some of my experiences:

I shop for gf-products in health product shop which is in the highest floor of Tanglin Mall, it is called Brown Rice Paradise. They have variety of different kind of dietary products and a very good variety of wheat-free products (bread, pasta, flour, cereal, biscuits...) I am sure they have also other dietary products but I have not paid attention to them.

And the supermarket in Tanglin Mall has also gf-bread in the freezer and they also have quite a good variety of other wheat-free products. Also Cold Storage Jelita is good in these products but the one in Tanglin Mall is better. Today I saw gf-products and bread in the freezer also in Marketplace in Vivocity. So probably almost all Cold Storage -stores have them?

I live in Hillview and shop in Tanglin Mall once every two weeks. No need to move right next to it.

The products are not local but international so I trust in the ingredients mentioned in the label.

As for eating out... It won't be easy with such a lot of allergies. Me myself - well, I eat out in hawker centres but carefully choose what I eat. I have been trying to describe my allergies to them but it is extremely difficult. Once they assured that there is no wheat in the spikefish. Yes, the sauce was wheat free but there were cereals on the fish... The better restaurants, it is not always easy in them either. You have to make sure that they understand. They do not have the ability to "go round the problem" and find the solution for you. Once I ordered steak and asked the waiter to ask the chef if it is wheat-free. Waiter came back and said that it is not wheat-free. Then I asked that is it the sauce - leave it out then. They did not even try to find the solution by themselves. You have to help them out...

Probably you have to eat a lot at home. Bu don't worry: with little kids you would not be eating out very much anyway.

Crabbox,

Please feel free to give names of recommended shops. Addresses and contacts as well. This is not the AB. We only come down on advertising for personal gain. We are here to help others so please edit your post to include same. The gluten-free problem here is a genuine one and all the data we can assemble is good for our readers.

I think, if you search the archives, you will find some good information. I'm sure I've contributed to a thread here already.

It's "Brown Rice Paradise" in Tanglin Mall. It's very good.

I've just come back from Vivocity which has a "Naturally Marketplace" - a branch of Cold Storage's Marketplace which stocks more organic and allergy-related produce than the others. I bought gluten- and egg-free pasta, amongst other things. They stock quite a good selection of Waitrose organic produce too.

All the Marketplace stores stock gluten-free bread, it's Mestemacher the German long-life stuff - I guess it has egg in it but I'm intolerant, not allergic, so put up with a little egg here and there. I'm sure you'll know if it's suitable or not.

Being allergic to soy as well as dairy is tough! Poor boy. (I'm dairy intolerant.)

Labelling on supermarket goods is ok. Eating out is tough - IME menus are not very explicit and you never know what's going to turn up.

Just edited me story to find out that Seasider told the same things Smile

Seasider, there is also bread in the freezer! Try it, it is much better than the long-life bread!

Thanks, crabbox, I must do. I don't mind the long-life toasted, and it's all good wholegrain, but I can't stomach it in a sandwich.
