Last time I went to anoher clinic where they had a new technology in which they just put high pressure water on my teeth and basically washed of all stains. This looked great, took about 3 mins and was included in the price.

Is this common and does this technology/device have a name?
hi there
i believe the "grinding" of your teeth that you mentioned is an attempt by the dentist to try to smoothen the teeth surfaces so they're not stained that easily. Basically for some people, their teeth have micro pores that trap stains easily, so smoothening may help to a limited extent.

the "high pressure" water you mentioned is not exactly a new technology.
yes, it is very common and the name of the machine is the prophyjet.
it is basically something dentists use to polish teeth. A lot of older clinics are still using the rubber cup and a polishing paste but this is not as efficient.
the high pressure water you are talking about is prophyjet.
Basically a mixture of an abrasive powder mixed in water under pressure is used to polish the teeth surfaces. Since "abrasive water" can reach a lot of the crevices better than just a cup with polishing paste, it does give a good effect. Its very simple, and yet effective.
Only downside is the stains will return fairly quickly, since the stains are just removed from the teeth surfaces. If the teeth surfaces are rough and have micro pits, they will still stain very rapidly. But then all you have to do is just get the polishing done again.
I believe most dentists do the polishing together with the routine scaling.

Hi gf

if you don't mind, I've got a few enquiries regarding teeth whitening treatments.

1. I've got a few patchy white spots. Which would be a more effective treatment - Laser at the dentist or take home kits?

2. What is the difference between the conventional teeth whitening treatments at dentists (like yourself) and the one that Fabulous is offering (http://www.fabuloustan.sg/teethwhitening/index.html)?

Would appreciate hearing from you soon, thanks very much.

Cheers

hi there

1. There are several causes of "patchy white spots" so the treatment will depend on the cause. If the white spots are due to intrinsic discolouration defects, then whitening would be a good treatment. In such a case, i would recommend an in-office whitening procedure. This may or may not be "laser whitening". Basically all in-office whitening procedures would work as well.
The take home mechanism utilises a much weaker concentration of bleaching agent (so that you can't injure your gums too much) and may not be very effective. I would recommend it for maintenence though.
Usually, immediately after whitening, the contrast with the white spots will reduce but not disappear completely.
After a few days to a week, the colour dissipates more evenly and settles down. Subsequently it'll be good to use the take home kit to maintain this final settled shade.

2. the Fabulous clinic is NOT run by healthcare professionals. Basically the people carrying out any procedure have not undergone any certified training programmes etc. They may know how to carry out the procedure, possibly by watching a "training video" or by watching someone else do it etc, and i can't say the technique itself is wrong. However, teeth whitening, as with any other dental procedures, involves a lot more than just doing the steps for whitening. It actually involves properly examining and diagnosing other problems etc. For example, if there are caries or gum disease that are not managed before the whitening procedure, there may be even more sensitivity or damage to the gums. Bleeding from the gums may also interfere with the result of the whitening.
Another example is if the discolouration or stains are due to extrinsic causes, or due to certain interferences in the maturation of the tooth structure, then whitening is not required and in fact, in appropriate. for extrinsic stains, just scaling and polishing would work. for structural defects in the teeth, other treatment possibilities would work better like crowns and veneers etc.
Yet another example is if there are fillings or crowns present, these will not be whitened and replacement of these prostheses have to be planned in the treatment plan.
Having said this, i personally have not visited these "whitening salons". In certain very simple cases where there's absolutely nothing to consider except to just lighten the colour of the teeth, (without even needing to clean!), these salons may work. this is just my guess cuz like i said, i've never actually been to these salons before.

hope this answers your questions.

cheers

What's the operating hours of your clinic?

My girlfriend just done the tooth whitening about 3 months ago with fabulous tan but not satisfactory. Can she do it again with you?

Do you charge according to severity of the tooth colour?

Appreciate

Gregory

Thanks. Hope you dun find me too long winded.

2. there are no specialists in tooth whitening. tooth whitening is not a speciality.

How to deal with sensitivity which everyone talks about?

to deal with sensitivity DURING the procedure:
1) the patient can use tooth mousse a couple of days or a week BEFORE the procedure, this helps to strengthen the tooth structure
2) take a suitable painkiller before the procedure
3) make sure severe gum problems, caries etc are managed first

to deal with sensitivity AFTER the procedure:
1) again, tooth mousse
2) an anti-sensitivity gel will be immediately applied on the tooth surfaces.

still, some sensitivity can be expected for a few days to a week. this varies between individuals. Some people have no problems at all just the day after the procedure

How long can the tooth whitening effect last?

Again, varies. depends on factors such as diet, initial shade of the teeth, the reason for the discolouration, age and how u maintain etc.
If you've a suitable take home maintenence tray done, you can do the whitening at home yourself to maintain the colour. Just place the whitening gel into the customised tray and use it once every 6 mths or so, this will maintain the colour very well. that's simple and effective.

Is there a guarantee like a 30 days money back if results are not satisfactory?

nope.

Thanks. Hope you dun find me too long winded.

sure no prob at all. glad you asked.

I'm sure many others here wants to know too.
