Ok, I give up. What about Denmark and Iceland? Having a bit of fun.

I think you're taking this joust between saint and myself a bit seriously - remember the question was about where to live in Singapore.

If we were seriously talking geography I would be far more careful about banter.

While we're at it what about the Falkland Islands or any other European possession. Would you consider them west or already east?

You seem to have lost your sense of humour - can we find that on a map?

Iceland is a country of its own and it is part of Europe, right?

At the same time I was just joking though... :(

Kidding:

I believe that Ireland is further west than Spain, Portugal or Scotland (isn't it the UK, which would include Scotland? ) but then what units of measurement do we use? GMT? Long/latitude?

You boys are just getting too tough now:

I give in!

Ahem, trying to bring this thread back to it's original purpose: whether it is better to live in the East or the West (of Singapore) taking into account convenient access to town and other lifestyle considerations, allow me to give my 2 shillings worth.

I lived in and around the East Coast for around 7 or 8 years. I've also spent a couple of years in a very central location at Bencoolen Street. I lived for a year on the northern end of Serangoon Road and spent a miserable 6 months (when I first came to Singapore) flat sharing on Clemenceau Avenue North. Currently I am living in the, er, South West, Telok Blangah area.

East Coast has got many pros going for it: it has a real surburban feel to it; it's pretty much a low rise place between Marina Parade and Bayshore which adds to a cosier, more intimate feel; the 'beach' is close by; there are excellent restaurants and bars around the area; it feels greener and much less congested certainly than Holland V; If you are working around Orchard Road, the East Coast area really does feel like a separate world. The only major negative point to my mind is the fact that getting from the East Coast into town takes a quite a bit of commuting time. Unless you are living in the Bedok/Kembangan areas, you are not really near to the MRT and you'll have to rely on a feeder bus or take a long bus journey into town. I loved living in the East Coast but eventually the commute got to me. I also found that at weekends, the hassle of journeying into town for entertainment put me off so i found myself hanging around the East Coast and, after a while, getting quite bored.

Where I am now, close to Vivocity, Sentosa and St. James and surrounded by Mount Faber on one side and Telok Blangah Hill behind, gives me the best of both worlds. I can grab a bus and be in my office in Chinatown within 15 minutes. The 124 bus will take me almost from my doorstep into Orchard Road is 20 - 30 mins depending upon traffic. The new circle line will have an MRT station close by as well. Admittedly, Telok Blangah is very much a HDB heartland so there is precious little in the way of the East Coast low rise ambience, but the estate I am in is small (by HDB standards) and does have a neighborhood feel to it.

Go a little bit further west from where I live (maybe five minutes by bus), just after Alexandra Road and you'll find Pasir Panjang village. There are lots of low rise condos and houses there and the whole area is very cosy indeed. It's still very convenient but there is a lot of construction work going on. Of course there is a lot of construction work going on EVERYWHERE in Singapore... If I were in the market for private property, this would be where I would look.

So if you were to ask me my feelings now, I would tell you that South West is best!
