Read any good books lately?

which reminds me that everytime i visit a doctor..i always feel like im robbing their precious time..and that they want me to get out as soon as possible

some doctors have that effect, but i think if a patient was to re-set the consultation by either offering to pay for an extended consult and/OR paraphrasing what Dr Groopman recommended, it does work to calm the doctor down.

i wish it wasn't so, but doctors try to squeeze in as many patients as they can into a working day... the practical realities of paying off our humongous student loan (2 degrees, and possibly a third for post-graduate studies) and other financial responsibilities result in us working mostly for our debts.

what's more, along the way, the altruistic mentality that most modern-day med students have gets sucked into a spiral of haves and have-nots... disappearing almost forever.

until they become old and get aware of their morality and try to do more pro bono stuff. too late, i say. too late... !

if someone is into mushy stuff, the kind of tear jerker novels, i can recommend "sam's letters to jennifer"... its about letters written to a granddaughter from her grandmom and how it intertwines with what each of them is going through at present.....
its written by james patterson, but very unlike his other books...

I love this book tearjerker

Also read his other book Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas

There's one in International Plaza in Anson Road its a small lending bookstore. They lend the books for a fee.

The Time Traveler's Wife is a good read.
I just bought John Ajvide Lindqvist's "Handling The Undead."
Last year I had read his other novel "Let The Right One In." Novel was good, movie left out alot of details.

There's one in the west too - GOHD Books. They sell all sorts of stuff - www.gohd.com.sg. But not the Archer/Crichton/Dan Brown stuff, mostly philosophy, religion, occult, fantasy, science, beatnik, art, etc.

If you're into obscure stuff, it's a good bet.

Has anyone read 'Sinuhe The Egyptian'? It's a very old book and it's been highly reccomended to me by a friend in London but I can't find it here so if anyone can reccommend it, I might try to order it. Mm...then again the library might have it....anyway currently reading 'Lost In Translation' which is a few years old now but the quotes in it from travellers around the world are hilarious!

So many replies and yet nobody has mentioned Nick Leeson's "Rogue Trader."

And then you go to one of the Harry's Bar joints and have no idea what the hell that "Bank Buster" drink on the menu is all about...
