Part time work (IT) for spouse available?

Post by skaffen » Sun, 23 Sep 2007 10:01 pm

Hi everyone,
like so many that came before me I´ve got the chance for a job in Singapore. Before I commit to anything I want to get some more info.

One of the biggies for us: My wife wants to work as well but since we have a two-year old toddler (who´s used to going to Kindergarten) it´ll have to be part-time, maybe 4-5 hours a day. She´s experienced in IT project management and support with some XML, PHP, SQL skills as well (but no real programmer, that wouldn´t be a job for her).

What are the chances for finding a job for her? Is the IT market too saturated for part time work? She could also do project management in other fields of course. I´ve checked some online job agencies and didn´t find anything, most part time jobs offered were more or less below her skill levels.

Thanks for any help and advice,

Andreas

Here is the problem as I see it. If your wife wants to work part time, then she could probably find something in the technical IT arena. Competition is strong and pay would not be all that great, especially for part time. Also, it might be harder to get a letter of consent from MOM to allow her to work in a field that has plenty of local talent.

On the other hand, good project managers are in top demand, but here is the catch... there are very few part time projects around that will pay the kind of money a good PM can ask for. It's a full time job.

You could email me (or PM... you'll need 5 posts) with more details... my company specializes in ITC project management in the APAC region.

Thanks, I was afraid it´d go in that direction. :( I might get back to you once it´s acute (but probably only next year, if at all) but the good news is that today I learned that sometimes they find work within my company for the spouses and since she´s fluent in Tamil, English and German and has German work experience and knows the culture there might actually be some demand.

Still pondering if we go at all that is, though by now we´ve more or less settled that Singapore would be a good place to live at, it´s more the "Do we want to go at all?" question now.

based on my experience, it is not easy to find a part time job here in singapore, especially for a lady. There are a few company like IBM encourage "work from home", but most of the company still requires to work fully, over time work is also very popular here.
Just be aware of those small company who claim to offer you "working at home", sometimes they are just trying to get another victim of "network marketing"
