Hi, may I know the amount for a non-skiving friend to give for the various hotels in Singapore? I'm now of the age that a lot of my friends are going to get married, and sending dinner invites to those Chinese dinner 8-course meals in hotel ballrooms.

I suppose it's $50 for 3-star hotels, restaurants and clubs?

What if it's a 5-star hotel or 4-star hotel etc.?

I generally give S$100 if the restaurant or hotel is anywhere near decent (and they usually are). If I know both the bride and groom I give S$200. Maybe S$80 if it's 3-star. S$60 perhaps if it's not even a restaurant but catered at the couple's own home. I think these numbers are fairly typical, at least in my experience.

S$50 sounds a little low, unless you're not intending to turn up but just want to give something for good luck. Then again, the couple will be happy to get anything at all especially if you're expat and not expected to know local customs. Also the low-rollers are generally balanced off by well-off relatives and good friends who may give substantially more so it tends to work out in the end.

I would say safe bet is $100.00. On average, a table for 10 in a good hotel is around $900 to $1300. So if you are good friends, good hotel, nice company, $150 to $200

And try not to give any amount in odd numbers. There are still many superstitious YOUNG people around!
