Worth going to Tioman Island from Singapore in one week end?

Post by cartusien » Sun, 16 Sep 2007 11:11 am

Hello,

Living in Singapore, I wonder how long it takes to go to Tioman?

Singapore - Mersing by car: 2 or 3 hours?
Then Mersing -Tioman : 1 Hour ferry?

I'm afraid the global trip will be too long to really enjoy the Island in one week end?

What do you thing?
have you done it already?
Is it worth?

Thanks for your advices,

Hi we went to Tioman for a long weekend from the thurs to sunday, the ferry is longer than an hour, we took the ferry over which took 2 and half hours and the speed boat back which cost a little more and that took maybe an hour and half...
was a little bit of a pain going for such a short time to be honest, was ok for a weekend but i would suggest going for longer if you can

i went on tioman for a week end (minang cove).
we went there using Berjaya Air, flight duration 30mn.
more expensive than the bus option of course.

The problem with the Berjaya flights is the timing: you leave Singapore around noon and the flight back is in the morning. So you pretty much have to take Monday or Friday off to have any time at all on the ground...

Better get going though, because the monsoon season is starting soon and Tioman starts shutting down at the same time.

Yes- worth going. I am planning for this weekend as am missing the beach & diving, will fly Berjaya air Fri -> Mon. Of course flying is the quickest way to get there. Sentosa is just not the same!

I was in tioman with a couple of frens the previous weekend and we stayed in berjaya. The resort is nicer compared to the other resorts around but I wont say it is very fancy.

We took a coach up, leaving SG around 7am, arriving tioman finally around 3pm. I would say the journey is quite long and painful...

If you intend to dive, then tioman is probably an OK option. Note that the monsoon session is near, which means diving session is going to be closed around mid or end October.

If you just merely look for a quick weekend break, i would suggest Bintan. It is alot nearer. The boat ride to bintan is only 1 hour, and it is less than 30 mins to get to most resorts. The time required to travel there, is definately substantially shorter and faster. The accomodations in Bintan is not necessarily more expensive or less fancy than those in Tioman.

Both Tioman and Bintan doesnt have too much activities going on, which is why, it is alot easier and faster to get to Bintan. You get to enjoy your break more. Like i said, unless you are specificially looking to dive, then you can try tioman. If you are just looking for a quick weekend break, Bintan will be a better option.

I would recommend Tioman over Bintan, we had a lovely holiday there, but pay the bit extra and go Berjaya Air, two hours on that ferry and you would sell your luggage to get off! Diving and snorkling is the best I've seen anywhere and my kids loved it. Plus it was much cheaper than Bintan. But beware the hotel/resort standards are pretty low, we booked into a "luxury' resort and ended up leaving, Berjaya again had the nicest resort, and good food in the smaller eating places. Take lots of insect repellant, the sand flies are brutal. Night time in the beach hut cocktail bar watching the sunset was fantastic.

If you mean the direct Sing-Tioman ferry, it stopped running a few years ago.

Post by daliat » Tue, 02 Oct 2007 1:57 pm

Just found this topic... I am going there next weekend, who wants to join? Probably sleep in Mersing friday night, get back Sunday evening. Do hiking, swimming, maybe snorkeling... relaxing and refreshing from the city. Mail me dalia at gmail, if you are up for that.

Monsoon season from when to when?

Post by Light » Mon, 15 Oct 2007 1:10 am

I have been wanting to go to Tioman for a while but keep missing the right time to visit. When can I travel to Tioman during the year? March through September, for example?
