Hi lovely, regarding your concerns, I believe they will exist anywhere you are. Let it be Japan, Europe, Aust or China, anyway. The fact is you are a stranger to the place and that prob contributes to the insecurity you are feeling. Of course, no place is perfect, same for a SG in India or even Aust, etc. Sometimes, its just got to do with a little luck and judgement. Hopefully you'll be settling well here.

Yo are right, anywhere you go these days there is discrimination ... its really sad  But i'm sure I'll love SG. As long as it has sweets and ice cream. hehehe and anime, manga ^_^ where is it best to shop for Japanese books? I love my asian things, I think when i land in SG I will squeel with delight, then run for the shops ^,~`

Thank you, Sky

Hi Sora-Chan, Singapore has a relatively low crime rate, it's one of the few countries you can feel safe walking around late at night. But even still, don't take statistics for granted. Be careful at all times. And keep your belongings close to you as there may be pickpockets. Mobile phones get snatched up pretty quick if you're not careful.

Of course it has sweets and ice-cream! If you know where to look, you can get New Zealand, Australian, American, German, British and Dutch ice-cream. Still can't tell what's the difference though, ice-cream is always ice-cream to me. :)

Best place to shop for Jap books would be Kinokunia at Ngee Ann City. It's just one floor below the library.

Enjoy yourself!

You're welcome Sora-Chan, nihonjin dewa arimasen, singapore jin desu. That's all I know how to say. I'm really a Chinese Singaporean. Kinokuniya has plenty of books of all languages, not only manga, so it's very popular here in Singapore - I suppose in Sydney too? I don't read much anime, but I'm a collector of certain American comics. So I can advise you on another subsidiary shop of Kinokunia's that specializes on comics, manga and American. It's at Bugis Junction, on the 4th floor, opposite the Kinokunia bookshop. About 4-5 full rows of anime, not to mention Japanese magazines and figurines, you will love it!

Well, I've not been too long in spore yet (will arrive there soon) but it didn't looked like a place where the girls looked stressed by sexual harrasment.
Been walking in empty streets in Chinatown crossing young women in short dress alone and she didn't looked scared neither because of me nor anyone else ...

hi, think i finally get what you meant. Depends on where you are. its just like for a girl alone walking down one of the streets in Bronx or remote london.. it'll be worse. Of course, in singapore its just a stare in places like geylang (red light district in sg), maybe one or two teases the very most from drunks maybe.. it is still very much of a nice place. town area is just fantastic for you to hunt for goodies!

not noticed

I have not noticed any 'sexual harassment' here in Singapore. Maybe I am not a good 'target' as when I am out I am pushing a baby stroller! I suppose like anywhere, if you are young, pretty and dressed a bit over-the-top you might get some unwanted looks or comments. Most of the time everyone just seems quite friendly in general.

Safe of course!

Post by Lil' Miss Lolla_lee_loo » Fri, 10 Sep 2004 9:32 am

To those who are concerned...

Relatively low crime rate here... u can go clubbing till the wee hours in the morning and get back home alone and be safe... have travelled a fair bit myself, alone, can't beat the safety and security here :) Of course, just keep ur wits with ya and u'll be fine for sure ;)

Just a tip for foriegn ladies out there who r travelling alone or new to a foreign place: Do ur homework extensively and look confident... ;)
Knowing locals thru a forum like this prior to ur trip will also help leaps and bounds! NjoI! ;)

Yes- singapore is absolutely safe. as compared to many neighouring countries. However do take care of your own belongings and of cos dress decently enough to avoid stares from the men.

Just avoid the remote places.

Is Singapore safe for females

Post by Bubbles » Sat, 11 Sep 2004 10:53 pm

Singapore seems to be the perfect place to be a female, alone, especially at night. I have often walked the whole length of Orchard at two in the morning, and apart from some dodgy areas.......Orchard Towers etc.......had no problem at all.

That is not to say that anyone, especially women, should not be vigilant and careful, wherever they are. Anywhere in the world.

It's a safe place, but please, don't be extra stupid and go say, round back lanes, or up in Macritchie or down Geylang at three in the morning, wearing a micro mini and falling about drunk.......

I know those are stupid scenarios but you know what I mean.

All in all Singapore is about a million times safer than say, Soho in London, or the Pigale in Paris..........but nowhere is without a problem or two, so my advice is just play safe, but don't worry your head too much.

Bubbs.
