Dear pootie,

I don’t think any of the trainees in STC are fat/auntie looking or have bad skin.

I know that this may come across as bitchy but ultimately, I guess the moral of your story is not to get obsessed with your lack of looks. You are you who you are and if you are rejected, you don’t need to flame the trainees in a public forum to justify your rejection. And certainly, if you have a face only a mother can love, bictching about other people here are not going to help you achieve your dream.

As 'auntie' or 'chubby' looking as they are.....they are there just for one thing.....pride in serving passenger....

an 'auntie' or 'chubby' looking might have more pride than those with beautiful looking faces....psychologically.....

Hey pootie,

Honestly sometimes is hard to tell what the interviewers are looking for..

The girls selected may not be the most prettiest, flawless skin or has the slim slim figure.. but that doesn't mean they don't have the qualitites to be cabin crew..

I did have the same thinking too, when i see the girls selected were not the best ones. Den kept thinking WHY WHY WHY???

sometimes it really depend a little on luck.. and you must must make the interviewer like you. make constant eye contact, keep their attention on you. if they lose their attention on you, you can say bye bye liao..

also, no matter how pretty you are, with the wrong attitude, it wont bring you very far.

anyway, the next interview will be coming soon, give in your best this time.. Jia you!

I just returned back to Singapore from one of my many overseas trips. Once again, the service received from SIA was exemplary to say the least. The cabin crew in the raffles class section looked genuinely very happy in their job/duties and that translated into a very warm and friendly service.

I believe that would be one trait that they are looking for during the interviews. I don't think it is just about smiling (because I think they can tell when they see a nervous smile, etc.....), but being happy and having a positive outlook in life because I think that shines through.

The Air Stewardess may not be the prettiest around and some may even have issues with their complexion which could not be cocealed perfectly, but the service was still fantastic!!!

Just food for thought.......

Why the next WRITE-IN interview? I think write-in is better, save time on waiting for interview. :)

Dear shibbybides

first of all, i thank you for the above comments.. i was with few other interviewees from my group and it wasnt just me who felt that they were not up to par to being a Singapore Girl.. the rest felt the same too.. and like i mentioned earlier, im not saying this cos im eating sour grapes or whatsoever reasons.. if u had seen wat we saw, u may probably feel the same way too.. maybe my expectations are higher than most others which is probably why i was disappointed when i saw the trainees.. n it was almost impossible not to recognise them with SQ's signature blue eye shadows, red lipstick and red nails..

im not just a face that a mother loves.. i wont say im pretty either but i have been complimented many times for my looks, not just by men but by ladies as well.. n i can speak well and carry myself well.. for all other job interviews that i had been to, needless to say, i was able to get the jobs...

well, maybe like wat the others said, these trainees were slected cos the interviewers could detect passion and love for the job.. maybe... maybe they're looking for an x-factor that non of us know..

well, congratulations to all who got thru safely, and for those that didnt get in yet, do try again on 20 oct.. who knows you may be the one they are looking for..

Pootie,

I am not an interviewer at SIA but what I know as a passenger is this:

SIA is a publicly listed company and like all public listed companies profitability is one of their key objectives which means that capturing the business of the frequent flyer/ repeat customers is of paramount importance. SIA knows this very well and that is why they are so profitable. Existing cabin crew members will know that SIA spends a lot of time conducting surveys of their PPS Club members (which at times are done during the flights itself) to ensure that the service constantly exceeds the customers expectations.

In all those surveys that I have completed, there was not once when the question being asked was: "Do you think our Cabin Crew is good looking enough?", please rate on a scale of 1 to 5. But rather it is about the quality of the service, attitude, etc....

There has been many comments in this forum going along the lines of "I don't know what SIA is looking for........". The truth of the matter is that the interviewers at SIA recruitment drives are actually indirectly recruiting what the customers ultimately want. If the only thing passengers wanted to see are gorgeous ladies walking up and down the planes aisle, I think it will be easier to switch on Fashion TV and watch it at home.

Yes, I agree. All things being equal, the better looking person will get through. Looks/turnout/bearing is important because that is the first impression. But once you start talking, as they say: "the rest is history...". I think there is a difference between being "polite, smiling & yet distant" vis a vis being "warm & friendly". At the end of the day, there are many ways to say: "what would you like to have for lunch?". This I believe, they will be able to detect during the interviews.

Ultimately what the customers are looking for is a warm & friendly service that could pre-empt their needs. SIA knows this well and does better than the competition and that is why the Business Class seats from say Singapore to Tokyo on SQ fills up much quicker compared to say JAL or ANA. You literally cannot get a seat on that direct flight unless you book well in advance. When customers are prepared to go a longer route like Singapore to Bangkok to Tokyo so as to be on SQ rather than fly direct from Singapore to Tokyo on JAL or ANA, you know that SIA must be doing something right......

Hi All,

I am new in this forum. Heard there is a walk-in interview on 20th Oct. Do you mind if i join you all? I am quite afraid to go all alone. May I know the venue of this interview?

Thanks all for your answers.

Kind Regards,

Ellin18

Stu and all,

To back up what you say here is a quote spoken by an interviewer to a female applicant who I believe still works for SIA;

"I don't want to hire you as you are very plain looking but you have a certain warmth about your personality."

She was accepted into cabin crew in her initial years.
