Which grade?

Post by TXfour » Fri, 24 Aug 2007 8:54 pm

We've been emailing a couple of different schools about placement availability, etc. for January '08. Three have come back with different grades for my one child. One said she'd go into 6th grade, another 7th and yet another 8th! So, coming from US, she'll be starting 7th grade on Monday here in TX. Her birthday is OCtober 3rd, 1994 - what grade will she go into in January in Singapore????

Any direction would help!!!

The grades you have been given are just "names" and will vary depending on which school you choose but that doesn't mean one grade is lower or higher than another. For example, different International Schools may call their grades "reception, year 1, year 2", others may have "K1, K2, Grade 1" or "Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2". They may call different sections of the school "infants, juniors, seniors" or "elementary, junior, middle, high". Best to forget what the grade is called and look at what age the children are and how long they have been in school. The cut-off date for different grades varies between schools as well eg may be 1st Sept or 1st January. Most likely you are getting good advice from the admissions people on the appropriate grade, but if you can, agree some flexibility if you find grade placement is a bit off when you get here.
