Moving to Singapore without a job - eek!

Post by karlos2007 » Mon, 20 Aug 2007 9:28 pm

Hi there,

I'm a native Brit considering a move to Singapore for a change of scene. I've never been to the place but I've only heard good things about it. I imagine that finding a flat/house share should be pretty straight forward and I have a bit of capital behind me to get me started.

Thing is I don't have a job secured, and don't plan on getting one till I get there. Is this sensible? And will I find it difficult to get reasonably well paid work? I have a degree, and plan on seeking office support work while I'm there.

Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Karl

Singapore is a very open country thereas there is no hiden cost when u want to start a business. The government website, http://www.ecitizen.gov.sg/ will provide u the infor u want to know. But I think before u want to come, u should have some idea what u want to do here. I think nowadays singapore is employee market ( no all areas, many of the workers here still drawing a very low pay and struggling ) certain area, financial sector especially, if u are the expert at this area, u can easily got a job over here. My company recently hire a Burmese and he told me that he just boght a airticket here and look for job, the visa is 1 months for him but he got friend here to arrange the accommodation for him.

Your odds are definitely against you. First of all, you cannot work without a Employment Pass. Secondly, doing office work is not going to get you a job as anybody here with a "A" level pass can do that at a salary that wouldn't pay for half the rental of a flat currently. A degree, while nice, doesn't guarantee you a job here as degree holders are a dime a dozen. Now if you're talking MBA well, it may secure you an interview but again, you're prospective employer would have to justify why you are necessary when a local could do the same thing.

You cannot rent property without a proper visa and you cannot get a proper visa unless you get a job. This isn't a third world country where you can just pass an envelopment under the table to stay here.
