Sleepless nights

Post by rodandhelen » Mon, 13 Aug 2007 10:27 am

Any help and advise here would be greatly appreciated...im deperate now.... My 1 yr old wont sleep without us, he seems to hate his cot and i cant get him to sleep in there unless i put him in there when he is in a deep sleep and even then he dosnt stay asleep for long, he wakes a few times a night!!!
He never used to be like this, he used to sleep in his room for most of the night, i assume he stopped doing this as we have travelled alot with him this past yr so this must be the reason.
We have no 2 on the way now and i really need him to be sleeping through in his own room before the new arrival joins us.
HELP??? Any mums/dads out there have any tips i can try?? i need a good night sleep ill try anything lol

Thankyou

Helen

Hi Helen,

I get that behaviour from my toddler too since she was 1.5yrs. What works for me if we use a stern voice and tell her that she needs to be in her own bed and that I will come back later to give her, her milk ( she takes formula once a night ) Most times, I am successful and occassionally, I cave in and take her to bed with us! From my observation, she sleeps easily when its late like past 9pm or when she's had an active day... pool or playground. Issue here is that we like to be in bed by 8.45pm.
By the way, congratulations on No.2!!! You are right to sort this out before the new arrival! Isn't it exciting ?

how about if you put the cot in your room? he sleeps there, but gets to be in the same room as mom and dad. it's not the ideal solution, i know, as it will be another hurdle when you move him into his own room, but perhaps it will slowly ease him into it?

or could it be that he's ready for a toddler bed?

if all else fails, i guess you should start thinking of a superking size bed, haha! :P

thanks for all your advise, i decided to turn his cot into a bed for him and we gave it a go last night, we had to keep going in and sitting with him but he stayed in his room all night even if he didnt sleep so thats a start i suppose. Hopefully we will get there over the next few weeks,

Helen

Contuining to bring the child into your bed is a very bad habit but as all of us with children know, the temptation is far too attractive in the early hours when you are tired.

We have had some of experience of this but found setting up a little bed next to the coat and holding their hand until they go to sleep normally does the trick.

Hope this helps!
