any idea on graphic designs charging fee?

Post by bunnynpearl » Wed, 18 Jul 2007 8:33 pm

hello all,

I have the intention on starting a graphic design firm, which would b specializing in 'below-the-line' artworks; ea designing company's catalogs, flyers, logo&the stationaries applications, packagings, etc. But the things is, i'm not very sure on how usually they charge here in singapore (since i'm not a local here)
Anyone have any rough ideas to share with me? I'd really appreciate it :)

For creative in below the line marcom, you can roughly calculate 150 S$ at the marcom agencies here, This is a normal project management fee for design.

That is if you are able to service the MNC's in Singapore...

You have to look at it this way. You need to define packages of services. For example, the folks that did my branding provided everything from logo design and tag line (which means you must have several different possibilities) to the creation of letter head, brochures, we bites, biz cards, etc. It came at a fixed price. I pay fixed prices for the creation of special pieces when I need them.

So, you need to figure out how much time it would take for you to do various kinds of campaigns for the business you want to be in. Then, how much per hour you need to make to make the business worthwhile.

You will come in less than the large firms (who will put more than one person on the project) and will appeal to smaller companies who cannot afford the large costs of a well known company.

You can get a friend to do some competitive research by having him/her call graphic designers to get quotes on the kind of stuff you think you would be doing.

If you are good, I think S$20,000 would be a good round number for a complete start up package.

To put that in perspective -- I was hiring a graphical designer a while ago to do a book. One of the quotes I got was S$50. Yes, that's fifty dollars.

Scoping problem? I've seen that, too. Two $1000 bids and a $100 bid. What could be wrong with this picture?

There was an hourly rate attached to the lowball bid, which implied that the designer would've had to work for half a year non-stop to reach your S$20K figure...

I would assume if you're in the industry, below the line marcom, you'd know it is the hourly management fee I referred to, 150Sgd.

And this fee is the nominal fee charged for creative work for the marcom divisions of the MNCs here in Singapore.

MNCs outsource their marcom activities like creative design, localisation, printing etc. This is being executed by the marcom agencies, who charge an hourly project management fee.

If you're gonna do creative for small companies or alike, I have no idea about the rates.
