What is the process i need to follow 2 hire a transfer maid

Post by peppercorn girl » Tue, 17 Jul 2007 9:56 pm

I am looking for the process in obtaining a transfer maid. I have interviewed a maid who is looking for a new family (employer) as her old family is moving back to England. What is the process i need to follow to ensure she is transfer to me successfully?

I have printed off the forms on the MOM website and completed them. I have a letter from her current employer saying she is happy to transfer her. I went to my local post office and lodged the forms. I am now worried that i haven't followed the correct process as the maid hasn't had a medical in over 10 months and she is over 50.

Can anyone please advise me on the correct steps to ensure a smooth transfer.

Thanks - awaiting your response.

when i brought our helper with us from jakarta i went to the MOM directly and spoke with the person at the help counter as you walk in (can't miss it - it's by the machines where you take the tickets.) the woman who helped me was REALLY thorough - told me exactly what i would need and what forms to complete. when i wasn't sure if the forms had been submitted properly (it also included medcal, bond, insurance, school certificate, copies of passports...etc) i kept a copy of everything and went back and again spoke with customer service and they had me meet with an agent at MOM who went over everything. the other option is to go through an agency to facilitate all the paperwork - but only if you want to pay out of pocket. hope this helps!

Paperwork for medicals

Post by peppercorn girl » Thu, 19 Jul 2007 11:54 pm

Thank you. Do you know where i can get the papers for the medical from. The maid said she spoke with her doctor and he said he couldnt do the medical without the papers? I feel like i am going around in circles.
Not sure what to do now?

after i submitted the initial paperwork to MOM (essentially the original application and it's requirements for a new worker in singapore) we received a letter from MOM with the medical form attached. if you submitted the paperwork through the post you should be able to track it through MOM using her existing work permit ID number.

going through the telephone is usless since you seem to get the automated response and it's virtually impossible to get a real person on the phone. i think i finally called the workpass division and got a live person - who of course directed me back to MOM but i begged her to help me. in the end i just went down to the MOM on havelock road and quite honestly i should have done that from the beginning. they were SUPER helpful.

it was REALLY time consuming and yes, it did feel like i was running around in circles - but honestly when it was all done it all seemed to make sense - if you submit everything correctly it all seems to fall into place.

one thing that stood out in your post is that she hasn't had a medical in 10 months. it's my understanding that all FDW need to have a check up every 6 months. i know as an employer i recieve the notice in the mail and the date the examination needs to be completed by. it's all tied into the government - so they will know that she hasn't been checked and i'm surprised she hasn't been repatriated.

if she is repatriated and has to renew her work permit i'm not sure she can do that if she is over the age of 50. again, you should really speak to someone at MOM. with our helper i needed to have the english test waived so we had to write a letter stating why it was important for us to bring her over from indonesia (rather than hiring someone here) and appeal to MOM. they really will weigh the case and the circumstances, but again, dealing with someone directly is better than electronically.

i really hope this helps! let me know if you have any other questions :)

THANK you

Thanks. After reading your advice - I jumped in a cab and went to MOM. It took less than 5 minutes in total for them to tell me her application to transfer was approved and that she didn't need a medical. Not sure why as her last was in July 2006 - but they said as she was over 50 she didn't need it. Success at last! I then jumped back in a cab - in total took 15 mins!
I will now await the letter in the post which should hopefully explain how i get my hands on her new WP card.

Thanks again for your help. It's all very daunting coming to a new country and trying to sort everything out from apartments, schools, maids, work, food, airtravel, furniture and the rest!

i know, i know!!! also, no matter how much people tell you, it's always tough to find your feet in a foreign city :)

glad it all worked out... they are really helpful at MOM huh? i mean i've sat in government offices in new york, london and jakarta and couldn't believe how efficient singapore is!

on a side note i think i answered your post about hair cut/color too! i was the same boat when we first moved... wanted to get some dodgy highlights sorted out and found a girl with cute hair and went to her stylist. she gave me a great cut - but the color was a mess. my hair ended up the color of a copper penny (that is actually an understatement... i sort of glowed in the dark!) chaya at toni & guy sorted me out (thankfully)... but i'm sure all the recs here are good.

let me know if you have any other questions about stuff!
