Help! What pass do I need??

Post by janabanana » Fri, 13 Jul 2007 1:01 am

I am in Singapore with a dependent pass and I have an offer to work part-time on a "casual" basis with a company here, but they cannot get me an employment pass at this time because they haven't got the approval from their corporate headquarters to add this full-time position. They're desperate for me to start straight away and not wait for approvals to filter down. I am fine with the part-time nature and no benefits as that way I can make my own schedule and I get benefits with my husband's company. Question is: What kind of pass can I get so I'm legal to be working? Do I make my own business and register it with ACRA and then apply for a LOC for myself or is there another way?? Thanks for any help.

If they want you right away, they are aware of the risks of employing you, without a work permit. If you get caught, its quite a hefty fine for the company and you would probably be imprisoned until deported.

Based on my knowledge of 1 person being caught, when 6 people from MOM arrived on a companies door step. The person employed was a repeat offender on forged documents, the company didn't know, because the guy came from an agency.

Now the agency is about to be done too! You can take the risk, and hope all those that work there are not jealous of you, and report you! Or you can go down to MOM and apply for permission to work, even then the company must have the quote to take you in, not sure if its 3 singaporeans for one foreign worker.

The permission to work would then be sponsored by the company.
Alternatively, you can register your own business with ACRA and you have 6 months, to sort your business out, and apply for the required permission for the entrepreneur pass. Not so easy to get, although I see other people coming and going from Singapore all the time, they are still managing to run a business in a very inconvenient way, but are registered here with Acra.

Should be easier for you! To be honest, to get caught breaking the law here, is certainly something you don't want!

So go for the alternative and setup yourself with Acra after you have spoken with mom, because you still need the forms for employment pass to work freelance and a sponsor. It also depends on the job too.

There are others on the forum with more knowledge than me in this area, so I'd hang on for some more replys!

Not planning on working illegally! I'm just wondering if I have to get an Entrepass or if I can get myself a LOC for my dependent pass if I register my consulting services with ACRA???
