Condo / Apartment Search - Timing

Post by afcb » Thu, 12 Jul 2007 4:53 pm

Hi,

I am due to start my new job in Singapore on 13th August, and my new company will be putting me in a Serviced Apartment for the first month. After this I will need to find my own accommodation, and through this website I have now gained a good idea of where I want to be and the type of apartment I would like.

Is it better to wait until I am actually in Singapore before contacting the rental agents, or could I get a head-start by informing them up front about my requirements ?

The area I most interested in is River Valley, so if anyone has any experience of this area I would love to hear some feedback. Aspen Heights is the place that appeals most from what I have seen (read) so far, so I would be most interested to see comments from anyone who lives / lived there.

Thanks,
Nick.

Is your company recommending a property agent for you or are you finding your own?

You can get a headstart by giving them your requirements in advance, although they probably won't start actively shortlisting apartments until you are here and ready to view (as units get snapped up pretty quickly these days, if they shortlist too early the unit will be gone anyway by the time you want to see it).

The benefit though about giving them your requirements early is that they can give you some feedback about how easy or difficult it is to find a place that matches what you're looking for, and whether your budget is realistic. You may need to make some trade-offs (space vs location vs newness of the building, etc) and getting feedback from your agent will help you think about prioritizing your needs - then when you view they can focus on picking places that fit what's most important to you.

Good luck!
