Indian doctor

Post by jimbooth » Thu, 12 Jul 2007 4:39 pm

My partner is a qualified doctor from India. She has 6 years post qualification experience. We are moving to Singapore by October. She wanted to do a post graduate residency in Singapore. We have contacted the National Skin Centre and NUS.

Can someone help me on the below

1. What is the status of an Indian medical degree in Singapore, are there qualifiing exams?
2. Is there any university other than NUS that offers a residency program?
3. Where is the Singapore qualification recognised?

Thanks for all the help

First question. Did your wife graduate from

All-India Institute of Medical Sciences
Christian Medical College, Vellore
Armed Forces Medical College, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences
Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Pondicherry University

If she does then it'll be a pretty simple procedure as her MBBS is on the listing of approved schools.

Otherwise, if she has 6 years post experience she could apply for temporary registration, but from my understanding, authorities are phasing out giving out temporary registrations so she will have to do some form of local or UK exams such as MRCP or MMed to continue to practice. My suggestion is to do the MRCP if she wants to go into dermatology - it's competitive and ask your wife contact Medical HR of NHG at

National Healthcare Group
Human Resource Department
6 Commonwealth Lane
Level 6, GMTI Building
Singapore 149547
Fax: (65) 6471 2171
Tel: (65) 6471 8900
Email: [email protected]

for further information.

Take care.

Thank you so much Toygirl. She is not from any of those colleges. I am actually quite surprised that her college is not on this list since her college (Rammaiya College, Bangalore) is higher rated than all of the below except for All India Instiute of Medical Sciences.

This is fantastic information. We have been taking to someone from the National Skin Centre all of of this week and I still did not have the info you provided.

Do you have any information on which colleges offer a residency course for Dermatology?

Thanks once again

I am afraid that school is not on SMC list of recognised universities. However, you can still try under the temporary registration batch.

Does she has a DNB or a MS/MD in Dermatology? I don't really see foreign MOs in Dermatology. They normally are channeled into Family Medicine or Opthalmology and maybe General Surgery.

My advice to her is to contact either NHG (details which I posted above) since NSC is under them.

She could contact SingHealth as well which is the other healthcare group

Director Medical Manpower
SingHealth Services
11, 3rd Hospital Ave
#07-00, SNEC Building
Singapore 168751
Tel: 65-65574965
Email: [email protected]

Do note that the temporary registration service will be phased out by 31 December 2007

Temporary medical registration for service will be phased out by 31 Dec 2007. The Singapore Medical Council will not consider any new applications for temporary medical registration for service provisions after this date.

Alternatively she could work as a Research Fellow at NSC if they have clinical research projects. She could contact NSC Clinical Head to check, his email is [email protected]

Thanks Toygirl. The list of colleges seems quite arbitary. I think temp registration seems to be the best way to go and there is a ticking clock on that.

Thanks once again
