These days you don't have to know much at all, so I guess if you know a little, your well on the way! Besides, there are also many templates out there, to make websites as easy as 1,2,3 if you want online sales, just sign up with paypal for the payment gateway.

I agree with ksl...why do your own when you can buy fully completed websites at low prices. U save time, and effort.
Some hosting companies offer free personalised websites as long as you host the website with them...cool.

My site is a ready built, but i just modify it myself, don't know html, enough, to make it special effect site, and seeing that i don't make money from this website, its not worth paying someone to do it! It's more of interest, hobby, and to help those build there own business! Like my wife!

I actually built mine from scratch and a lot of cut, paste & modify using a free html program called Firstpage 2000 by evrsoft. It's very easy to use and you can learn a lot with a little patience and searching the web for java scripting and html online help guides. My links page is part of that site but without any advertising or direct linkage to the main page. This was done deliberately.

Yes also have frontapage 2000, and actually i do know some basic html, but i love experimenting, by downloading the 1.2.3 web builders, into frontpage, then messing around with them, and uploading again, seems to work prettywell, although the problem is the key words and description, it seems to reset, if adding a page, meaning you can only set the keywords one time, when the site is first built.

The templates are royalty free at my host, so those i like I download and play around with them. Your website is very useful SMS, nice work!
But i do have a question over security issue. My host is in USA, I registered a new web package and paid online with visa, nothing happed so I requested a reply, they asked me to photo copy my passport and visa card, to verify that its me!

I said no, because they have my visa card on file, with my other accounts, anyway, they asked me to phone billing.

I did this, and they verified by asking me details of my other accounts, fine they said, it is now verified and will be ready within 48 hrs, this is 2 weeks ago! Still nothing happens, so email again asking what the problem is, they reply asking me to fax over the details of my card and passport.

They don't seem to understand, that if i was to fax my passport & visa card details to an unknown person or even a known person, then Visa would not cover any loss on my account, because i would have violated Visa's rules of security!

In the end I fell out with them, and now have to look for another supplier, but they still host 3 of my other websites :???: I am!

ksl,

Most of the smallish hosting companies will verify everybody from outside the US requesting drivers license, passports, etc. because of the very high level of fraud; that is a common practice and you can't really blame them for that.

On the side note, the family photo on your website is 670K in size and takes quite some time to load - if you reduce it in size your website will take a lot less time to load :)

Cheers,

Max

Just find a good book or website and learn basic HTML first that is also helpful if you learn Dreamweaver later;

Completely agree. If you dont learn the basics you'll run into trouble later
If you skip the basics and go straight for flash sites and something doesn;t work quite right you'll be screwed.

It realy is quite easy and straight forward ..trust me.

Example
<html>
<head>
<title>this is a test page for the expats forum</title>
</head>
<body>
this is text <BR>
<b>this is bold text</B>
</body>
</html>

The above is a valid html web page that just shows two lines of text on a white background. It really is that simple ( to start with)

Theres loads of tutorials on the web from beginers to advanced

Google is your friend

Good Luck

I would say that Oscommerce , zend cart or cre laoded would be a good choice for you if you want tp start an online business with limited amount of cash in hands.

check these shopping carts out they are worth the time you'll spend setting them up

just get someone to do a simple site for u easier.. spend some money.. get a professional site. even u learn programming, u are not design trained.. the site still sucks.. in the end u waste even more time...

careful if you want to outsource, some so called "designers" or "programmers" tend to think they are professional when they just know how to store data in the database and call it back on a page...
