[Update] Got EPEC: Request for guidance regarding job

Post by awesomearpit » Sat, 23 Jun 2007 10:51 pm

[UPDATE: I got an EPEC : will be grateful for your advice regarding consulting/business analyst positions in Singapore]

I graduated with an Honors Bachelors in Computer Science and Economics from the University of Toronto in Canada last year. I got a job at Microsoft in the US as a program manager. I was told i can join in October, once i get my US work permit. So i spent the months traveling the country and relaxing, secure in the knowledge that I have a good job waiting. But recently found that I will be unable to join due to unavailability of H1B visas.

So I find myself in India, with no job and many months wasted.
Since my brother is studying in Singapore, in SMU.. I was wondering whether it is possible for me to get an EPEC - what are my chances?
And what are the chances of getting a job offer - and what salary should I expect?
I am looking mostly for a program Management or consulting type job - not computer programming.

reading stuff on this forum makes the situation look really bleak... most EPECs seem to be rejected.. and the salaries offered differ wildly with new grads earning as low as $1500/mo.

Beside the degree from UofT, I have internship experience at Delloite and at IBM Canada. but no long term fulltime job experience.

Thanks a lot for your help

It means they want to see your passport particulars, photo, and degree. You DID say you had been offered a job by Microsoft didn't you?!?!? You would have fit in nicely.

If you are successful they will notify you saying so. :?

thanks for rhe response.
there is no place for me to mention my specific situation (ie Microsoft job) or even put up my resume..
they only asked for the degree, photo and passport all in jpeg format.. how can they possibly decide based on those 3?

and the folk who have been rejected.. was it after or before additional documents were requested..

also, should i upload my resume or a letter or something even though it has not been explicitly asked for?

any advice would be welcome.

:oops!: That kinda went over like a lead balloon didn't it. :o

Sorry about my microsoft remark but you didn't catch it anyway so no harm done I guess.

Do you think you are the only one who has applied for an EPEC? They probably have 100's if not '000's and have only 'x' number of availabilities. Who knows. Just hang in there until they let you know something. If we tell you something and it turns out wrong? How? Want a crystal ball?

i wasn't sure whether you meant that "since i got into MS I will be a good fit" or whether i got that into my EPEC application somehow - sorry my bad :)

i know.. nobody can tell.. just got a little excited at the ease of it all after getting screwed by the US visa system ...

Thanks anyway!

Okay got the EPEC :)
this took just 3 days... amazing!
Now on to the next step.

I'm looking for a Business Analyst/ Associate Consultant type position, preferably with a well Known MNC.
I really believe I can shine in that position.

if anyone is kind enough to share any contacts you may know who may be able to help or if you can offer any advice, I would me much obliged.

I'm a newbie to the whole Singapore scenario, so if i ask a few obvious questions - go easy on me guys ;)

thanks!

Congrats, now come the hard part! But at least now you have the invitation to do so. All good things come to those who wait.

Good luck.

Thanks guys!
After reading around on this forum, it seems like its going to be really hard to get a good job in Singapore, especially not being a PR\Citizen.

Any advice on which comapnies are more friendly towards hiring people on an EP?
Are MNC's more amenable to hiring people on an EP?

To get a better idea about my background, have a look at my Resume in the Classifieds section:

(am I allowed to post a link to that section here?)

Thanks for this most wonderful forum guys!
