Anyone know of any online bookstores in Singapore that sell academic/research based books? I am looking for something on the lines of Barnes and Noble where i can check their database and price list. Also looking for a bookstore where one can sit and have a coffee.
I tried Google and a search on this forum but didn't get any useful leads.

i order a lot of books from amazon.com and have them sent out to me here. i would be surprised if you could find something better for english-language books.
for lingering/in-real-life reading & hanging out, probably the best is border's on orchard road, but it feels a bit more cramped than the average borders i'm used to and isn't quite as leisurely feeling as i'd like. there's also a place in takashimaya (forget name) that's got a good selection but it's less of a lingering sort of place, imo.

If you are looking for academics and research books. Try KK hospital. they have one specialised bookstore for research and medical research.
Which category are you looking at. Cos there are a few bookstores littered around Outram and Novena area that sells specialised books on engineering, medical research, even archealogy and marine biology.

thanks a lot the posts. i will check these places out.
i am looking for books (in english) on economics and mathematics. i know for sure all these books are available on amazon. by the way, are there is any customs duty or restriction on books purchased from overseas? for instance what is the max purchace amount for 2nd hand books? some books that i am looking at may well be over a US$100 each and i wouldn't want them to get stuck in customs.

Try this
http://www.kinokuniya.com.sg/, using bookweb singapore, I ordered some and they bring to my office free of charges (>sgd50). I also bought a book from amazon.co.uk and it was delivered to me without any custom interference.
