Singapore American School - kindergarten

Post by nickyt30 » Sat, 02 Jun 2007 12:09 pm

Hello All:

I have just received a call from SAS advising that they have accepted my 5 year old into their Kindergarten class. However, school is now on holiday and I will not have the opportunity to speak with any of the teachers. This school was recommended by myhusband's company and seems to have a great reputation. However, the school population seems to be quite large but seems to be academically challenging. Does anyone know whether both writing and reading are emphasized at the kindergarten level and whether the average child has achieved these skills once the kindergarten year is finished?

Thanks for your response.

Nicole- Our friends, long-term residents in Singapore, advised us to send our child (also 5 and also entering kindergarten) to SAS if we could possibly do so. SAS has an excellent academic reputation, or so they say. I would think that means reading and writing at the end of kindergarten. All the kindergartens here in Seattle expect the children to read and write at the end of the year. But that's all third-hand knowledge! Good luck with your decisions. Best, Greta

Greta,

Thanks for your response. I am still considering the school. However, the large number of children who attend, I find quite overwhelming. I will make the best decision given the information which I have at this point.

Take care and enjoy your trip over to Singapore if you are not here already.

Keep well!

Nicole.

We are moving over in a month from the US and have enrolled our 2 kids in SAS, one will be in 4th grade and the other will be in kindergarten.

We went over last month to do a house hunting tour, and toured a few of the schools over there. We were very impressed with SAS and actually sat in on a 4th and kindergarten class. The curriculum was wonderful, the expectations are great, and the kids all looked and seemed very happy. After touring all 4 schools in Singapore, we then made our decision on SAS. We aren't going to be living in the Woodlands, either, but the busing system looks great (much better than the US).

Good luck with your search and decision.
