Nothing comes easy I guess. I have learn Japanese for 10 years and french for 4 years. Nothing can be compared to mere interest and hard work. of course a good teacher is a big bonus. With reading and writing skill, you will get a strong foundation compare to only conversational. Sometime you do know why you say things in certain way until you write it down, read it and compare with other structures.

My 2 cents worth

I agree with you, learn a language you must know how to write and read.

Depending on what your first language is, Mandarin can be harder to learn for some more than others. Chinese Mandarin is not phonetic in nature, so learning to speak and write is a challenge if your mother tongue is phonetic in nature. Linguists will probably slap me down with the imprecise use of the term 'phonetics', but this means you (mostly) can't tell how to pronounce a Chinese character from the way it is written, whereas you could figure out how to read an English word by knowing how to parse and read its component syllables.

Other Asian language speakers, esp. East Asian such as Japanese and Korean, will find a lot of commonality with Mandarin.

That said, there isn't a better opportunity to learn the language when you can use it daily in 'normal' situations, as opposed to some contrived scenarios in the classroom. Apart from English and Mandarin, I also learned German, Japanese and Malay, but lost most of German and Japanese after not having spoken them regularly.

There are Mandarin classes conducted by the NUS Extension School: http://www.nus.edu.sg/nex/.
