alternative music scene/book club

Post by mikachu226 » Fri, 25 May 2007 1:48 am

hello!

well, I just moved to Singapore a few weeks ago from Brighton, UK (originally from Germany). So I experienced somewhat of a culture shock moving from one of the most liberal places to....well...ummm...Singapore. I am wondering whether there is such a thing as an alternative music scene here? By that I mean anything from rock to jazz to ska (important to me is that the musicians play their own stuff, I have heard many excellent cover bands here!). Last year I went to the Baybeats festival which was great! Otherwise would somebody be interested in finding the scene with me?

Right, second thought was to maybe start a sort of book club where ideas and views can be exchanged. Very open in the choice of books (personally I like provocative writers, like Oscar Wilde in his times or even someone contemporary like Catherine Lim, but again really not very picky in my choice of books!).

Ok, thanks for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Singapore. I have been also searching for some rock bars at the moment, but I can't give you any good ideas at the moment. I hope this thread may be helpful to you and others interested in music like me.

Coming to bookclub, there is already one existing. Although I couldn't join their meeting yet, I know that the next will be held 30 May.

Please send an e-mail to [email protected] to join us. Here are the details for the meeting. Take care :)

Dear all,

Please find below details about the next book club meeting.

Date / Day : 30 May (Wednesday)
Time : 7.30pm
Venue : Hyatt Hotel (Orchard Scotts Road) at Scotts Lounge
Attire : SMart Casual ( dictated by hotel)
Topic : Historical narratives. Please bring along a book of this genre if you have one. If not, please attend meeting with an open mind. You might be inspired to start reading one.
Reservation made under my name Sophie Ng
With my kind regards

I just received a message that the book club meeting has been postponed to a date after 1 Jun. So you have time to join the club and catch everyone in that meeting. I hope to join too unless it coincides with another event that evening.

See you around.
With my kind regards

I may have misread the e-mail. Perhaps we can organise a meeting if nobody wants to wait for a whole month.

Also check out rock concerts thread for updating what is going around in Singapore.

Hi there,

I moved to Singapore a few months ago from Lake Tahoe, US. I'd like to check out alternative music with other expats.

I'm interested in the book club too.

I'm definitely experiencing culture shock, moving from the mountains to sea level - and not finding much live music which used to be a staple in my life!

If anyone's going to a show, let me know!

Does anyone know if many acts get to Hong Kong? Seems that a lot get to Japan (where the rock scene seems pretty strong). I was going to see Snow Patrol in Tokyo (okay, not exactly alternative - and for the record they cancelled the gig - grrrr), but despite their popularity here I doubt they'd ever tour. I mentioned the lack of bands here to someone at work and the reply I got was "but Coldplay came here!". Aiyo...

I'll keep and eye out and if I see anything, I'll post it here 8-)

ha ha, "make coldplay history!" is what I say to that!

Anyways, tonight is one of the Bar None Monday Sessions (Marriott Hotel). Three local bands are performing (You and Whose Army?, Documentary in Amber, B-Quartet); starts at 9pm.

I don't really know what type of music they play but 'You and Whose Army?' is a Radiohead title, so I assume something along those lines. 'B-Quartet' is one of the more known Singaporean bands (check them out here: http://www.agingyouth.com/records/artiste_b_quartet.htm).

I'll probably be going tonight at around 8.30pm (happy hour is 7-9pm). So if anybody would like to join me, let me know, or just turn up! Maybe then I can avoid looking like a twat because I'm there alone, hugging my beer!

As for the book club, if someone would be able to organize something before July, that would be excellent! Too much responsibility for me though, I'm terribly unorganized :o

Ok, hope everyone had an interisting day!

p.s. I'll make sure to check out the Blue Jazz sometime soon! Sounds good!

Wednesday night at Insomnia

Post by muratkorman » Fri, 01 Jun 2007 6:22 pm

The band performing on Wednesday night at Insomnia was quite well. They played mainly rock hits from various artists. It is worth a try.
