International Preschool for 4 year old -Help please !

Post by movagn » Fri, 27 Apr 2007 11:18 pm

Hello all, I am relocating to Singapore from San Francisco with hubby and my 4 year old daughter. Happens to be confused with which preschool is good for her. Especially the one with diversed students and balance between play and study. Would very much appreciate your help! :)

Is your children on a waiting list for one of the international or local schools? I would assume that you would like your child to attend the same school. Several, if not all, of the International Schools have a K1 and K2 before they start grade 1. Check on this which may solve your problem.

K1 for my daughter

Post by movagn » Sat, 28 Apr 2007 1:05 pm

we are actually will be school and apartment hunting next week. We are still in US now and try to see which school is actually good for her knowing that we will not be living in Woodlands area. I see online that there are many Montesorri but not sure which one is better than which. That's the confusing part. I checked with Buttercup MOnteorri and they said the waitlist would be upto 9 months ? I will appreciate any help from this forum. Thank you.

I am a bit concerned on the activities after the tour. However, I am impressed by the school area and it is clean being new. Another view is that since this school is new, they will try harder I suppose to earn trust and credibility. I visited Etonhouse at orchard but I think the premium that they charge is abit excessive. I have gone to SAS and I think it makes more sense if they charge premium due to the school size and facilities. I have a 4 year old daughter by the way and would love to meet other mom who wants to have playdate. Liliana

Eton House

My 5 year old daughter attends Eton House on Mountbatten Rd and it is without a doubt the best school she has ever attended and IMO far beat the larger International Schools K1 and K2 years. I found it quite tough to find a truly child-centred school - even the Montessori was more teacher led. My daughter has been at Eton for almost 1 year and will be moving to Year 1 in August. She absolutely loves her school and has a very well-rounded view of her own education. Basically I thoroughly recommend Eton House (Mountbatten).

There are a lot of options

It depends how much you want to pay and how open minded you are to intercultural experiences. There are playgroups and music and art groups all over town, which are really fun for little ones. They go as often as you like. There are several nice parks and beaches for play--lots of playgrounds. My wife loves the Shichida method out of Japan--Singapore classes in English--little pricey.

As a teacher, I am not convinced that there are large differences among schools and curriculas internationally. People who love little kids choose to teach little kids. Whether they be at the most expensive school in town or the cheapest, I am not sure that there are enormous differences--except on the level of prestige. Level of job satisfaction is key. If your son or daughter's teacher feels content at work, that is perhaps one of the most important questions to answer.
Good luck.

Good luck
