How is Singapore life for a young single woman?

Post by Niki » Fri, 27 Aug 2004 5:20 pm

I've been offered a possition in Sing. The money is not very good (2400) but I think it would be good experience for me and my CV. The problem is I don't know anything about Sing. How is life for a young girl used to travelling with a bagpack around the word (which means, no need of luxury).

Hi Nicky,

First It's 2400 what ? (hope not malaysian ringgit ;))

I've had an offer too very recently and been there for a week (last week) to check whether it was ok... Well for me it's ok ;)

I'm french, alone too, and used to travel only with my backpack and my camera the same way as you seem to go.

Being alone in Singapore does not seem at all to be a problem. First because it's really really safe, second because it's so multi-ethnic that you should easily find friends in any community there.

Life seems (I always say seem because i've spent only 1 week and not 1 year there) enjoyable with enough things to do not to get bored too quickly (cultural, intellectual, travel, go out etc...)

Place is very clean and you can find almost everything you need wherever you come from.

From which part of the world are U ?

Hope it gives you some idea. Don't hesitate to ask for specific point if needed.

BTW 2400 if Sing dollar seems to be a bit low to go with all the things you might need to pay in Singapore (especially accomodation.)

Hi

I have been in Singapore for three months

I think you would be fine here, very safe as the previous poster said

There are lots of organisations and groups that you can join, check on www.expexpress.com.sg for YCFE (Young Childless Female Expat) Just a forum for a group of people to post happenings - easy to join in and have fun!

$2400 is a bit on the low side, you'll struggle a bit but it is do-able and the experience is fantastic

Good luck!

Niki

Thank you

Cheap acommodation starts around $350 for a whole room in HDB with more if you have more requests. You can look in the classified ads of straits times new paper for more choices or get a agent to help you find a suitable one, but prepare to pay a fee. $2400 is okie, since you do not need to pay CPF or income tax. A lot of locals don't even get that kind of pay. For day to day expanses, depending how you want it to be, can be either cheap or expansive. There are lots of hawker centres and food courts selling food at cheap prices. :D

Dear Niki,

I was surfing by and saw ur post... 2400 is grand Niki... most of us locals don't even get that much, especially so after the economic crisis... on top of that, just like one of the folks here mentioned, u won't be deducted for CPF or taxes... so if u don't mind at all, staying in the heartlands, like a HDB flat, of which there r tons here for rental in really good neighbourhood and with superb facilities around, u can get by with the amount u have very easily, at a breeze. Say, u can rent place for like 350-700 Sing (approximately) if u don't drive, possibbly transport might be a bit o a hike since they've increased the transport fees... food wise, u will be spoilt for choice! ;) Unless u go clubbing very frequently, coz clubs here charge ya a cover fee for entrance...

So there u go... it should be a breeze...
