Which is best way to get a notebook com. as reasonable price

Post by michelle1024 » Sat, 14 Apr 2007 9:55 am

Hi Dears

I'm currently looking for a new notebook computer and tried Sim Lim square once already since some of friend recommanded. And i'm think about to buy Sony Vaio C series.
Well im a Korean and i noticed Sony notebook in korea is cheaper than here Sim lim square. but problem is there might risk to delivery as well. so best way is get it here in sg. but somehow price different gap is almost 250US$ so i feel still hesitate to decide.
and AMD gonna release next generation soon maybe by May..so processor price of Intel will be down even more and computer price also down even more than now according to my friend who working at IT industry. But i would get one for me soonest since it's not easy to wait for more than month.

Well i would ask to you guys here expat where place either online and offline shops offer cheaper price of sony notebook? or is there any news about price down? I heard that basically sony control retail price so those retail shopper only can do is free gift like memory upgrade or usb memory..etc. If in case you know any idea some place offer cheaper price then please let me know it. Many thanks in advance!

Cheers!

If you are looking for a Sony specifically, then don't worry about the money. They, like Apple products are grossly overpriced in the most competitive of stores. Why spend $400~$500 or more for a Sony when you can get a bigger spec Dell or HP for 2/3's the price. All of them will be out of spec in 6 months anyway. Do your bank account as favour. Keep the difference to go on a 3 day paid holiday in the region. Or are you one of those who only use it when they go to Starbucks for bragging rights?

Sorry Plavt........ I know you are a Apple user.

:x

Actually Apple are coming down in price; I don't know what is available in Singapore and the service per vendor seems to vary wildly from country to country. Dell's trouble is they advertise at what seems a low price only to talk customers into buying various peripherals, software or better quality parts thereby hiking the price up to much the same as an Apple or other prodcut; at leas that is their tactic here.

As much as HP's technical support has me ranting and raving down the phone and wanting to reach for a meat-clever there products are actually well designed. I have an AMD turion laptop (Pavilion) in addition to the Apple products (still need windows for some things) which I bought for a mere £500 which is around SGD 1500 excluding the extended warranty.

You need to bargain. I got rebates on about $500 when buying my dopod 810 in Sim Lim (a money rebate plus extra items together with the phone). If you need help - pm me. I'm going to buy a notebook soon, though the model i need is not being sold yet.

I understand that English is not your native tongue but unfortunately I don't have a clue as to what you just said! :?

My whole point you just reinforced. You already indicated that you have been to Sim Lim already. Therefore you already know that HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, and half a dozen other name brands of notebooks with the same spec are 2/3's cheaper.

Even crying "I don't have enough budget" you still want a Sony. Therefore you are Brand Obsessed and therefore my comments. As far as design goes, what design makes a Sony stand out? Like most notebook, they are comprised of contract manufacturers internals like creative sound cards, 3rd party manufacturers of HDD's and RAM, Even the Network Card and Motherboards aren't usually made by the Brand Name Assembler.

I have to agree with Sms; in the UK Sony is IMHO not worth the money; expensive, out of date software, replacement parts unavailable and almost non-existent customer support. Most of their laptops here are around the £2000 mark yet you can buy an HP, adequate for many users, for only a quarter of that price.

Is there any specific reason for wanting a Sony? Most of what anybody would want to do can be done on most if not all other brands again at a lesser price.

sundaymorning. as i asked u better check the article then answer it. thanks!
i don't have much time for u so i just would let u know that people not usually go for design only to get a laptop as u think someone who take sony they r all supposed think about design only. and i mentioned already the model what i was thinking is most cheap price among what i was consider and i didn't think about to get sony here in sg since i noticed here price is expensive than korea which is more than 250us$. still don't u get this? and one more thing guess u don't know what is value of brand. of course most of them r made in china or somewhere and they don't have all those line for parts just like car as well. but at the end of day..there's quality control by their own brand that's how do works!

Hello,

I just bought a notebook from Funan so I've been through the whole hunt!

I think SMS is just trying to give you the best advice and get you the best value for your money.

I guess it depends on what is most important to you - the spec of the computer or just that you want a Sony?

Personally - I wanted reliability, a good spec and something that would last me a few years. Those were my priorities.

I was advised not to get a SONY because they only integrate with Sony peripherals and we have an LG flatscreen monitor (not that I need it now with this beast!). I don't know if this is true but when I looked at Sony - they were just expensive for the spec they were offering, so I ruled it out.

In terms of getting the best deal, once I had decided on the exact notebook I wanted - I went round to the different vendors (there were only 3!) and asked them for their best promotion/discount. Ask them what their best price is for NETS or cash if you are able to pay like that. Then take the 2 lowest and tell them that if they can give it to you for $xxx amount then you will buy now. In my case I showed the second best vendor the cheapest price and told them that I would prefer to buy from them (which was true) because they were a bigger retailer (Microware) and they came back with the same price as the lowest one.

Also check the warranty - whether it's manufacturer done, or retailer and if it's international if you're going back home in a couple of years.

Finally - if you're not interested in the free colour printer etc etc, then ask them if they can discount the price rather than give you the freebies.

Hi, I guess I'm going to agree with the rest that vaio is just for show-offs. I'm currently studying in a polytechnic here in sg and I can tell you only those who wants to look 'cool' would consider getting sony. I think perhaps the variety of colours of vaio c attracted you, but seriously, it's not worth the money! It's not practical to waste your money, seriously. I'm not trying to spoil your spirits but seriously, if you are going for design, I would suggest you getting Asus laptop if your budget allows. I'm also, like you, looking for a laptop and my mates have advised me to buy Asus but my budget didn't allow so, hope you will make the wise choice then!
