recycling in singapore

Post by ffsgrelier » Wed, 04 Apr 2007 11:00 am

good morning all

I have just moved to singapore and am slowly finding my feet here.

We are staying initially in a serviced appartment and i am a bit unsure as how to recycle plasctic bottles, paper etc .. as there is only one chute of the kitchen.

Could anyone tell me how or where I should separate the items please.

I just got into the habit in the uk and believe that every little helps when it comes to leaving a healthier planet for my kids.

Thanks for your replies

Hi, remember the same thing when we stayed in an apartment.

If you separate and bag up your paper, bottles, cans, clothing the cleaners will take them usually. They get money for the cans etc.

Recycling isn't as prevalent here as some countries but they still do it. If you are in a landed property you can request a recycling bin which is cleared fortnighly. This is managed through your waste supplier. I understand the HDBs have recycling too.

If you live in a condo it is up to the management, if they don't have a recycling centre in the basement you could always rally around to organise one.

Otherwise there is the recycling dropoffs where you take your recycling, really need a car for this. I found a list of drop off points a while ago but cannot remember where and I picked up a brochure on what can be recycled here but its probably been recycled. Our local one is at the petrol station of all places.

Recycling means something different entirely in Singapore though. Everything that is reusable is wanted here, we have a tinker that goes up and down the street several times a day (with his horn blowing) picking up old newspapers, furniture, basically anything you don't want. Otherwise its rubbish and that gets sifted through sometimes either by passerbys or the rubbish men.

If you are in a Service Apartment why don't you ask the management office for recycling details? They should know what alternatives you may have if they do not provide the service. Otherwise try going with the previous posters suggestion of at least bagging it up separately.
