I'm an American moving to Singapore in August. I'd like to find a flat in an interesting walkable area with bars, coffee shops, etc. I will be working near the Buona Vista MRT station, and don't want to live too terribly far away. It would be doubly great if there were a nice fitness center nearby.
I've been looking online at places in Holland Village. Any thoughts on that area?
Thanks.

I think Holland Village is a good location for you, since it is near your workplace and places with food and pubs. It can also meet your basic needs of a few supermarkets, few banks, dainty shops and pubs and cafes.
There isn't a second better place I can think of.

Most definitely HV is a good choice..Expat-friendly area with all facilities as joop mentioned... There is no fitness centre in HV as for now...but i checked with Fitness First n i was told that they a going to open up one outlet over there at the end of this year...Anyway nearest fitness centres are not so far away...most of them located in orchard which is just 5 mn taxi or 15 mn bus ride away from HV..
There are couple of bars , pubs n restaurants...It's a good place to chill-out after work, to have a dineer n to drink a beer...but i found HV is more expat family-orientated area, young singles get bored on weekends over here n usually go to Clarke Quay..
Anyway every day is a work...work...work..so btr stay near to the working place!
