Housing near General Hospital

Post by tmcoombs » Mon, 26 Feb 2007 10:32 am

I'm looking for what district would be near the hospital where a new medical school is being built.
What district is it in?
What is the area like?
Crime rate?
Noise?
School?

Please help because I'm clueless about Singapore.

Are you talking about the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore (GMS)?

It's close to Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar and Sentosa (I don't think these mean anything to you . . . )

Nearby condos include

Teresa Ville http://www.singaporeexpats.com/singapor ... -ville.htm

Mount Faber Lodge http://www.singaporeexpats.com/singapor ... -lodge.htm
If you choose this condo which is up on the hill, then it's quiet. If you choose a place closer to the main road, then it'll probably be more noisy due to the traffic.

How old are your children? Which school do you intend to send them to?

Have a look at http://www.moe.gov.sg/corporate/parents_foreign.htm

Many choose to live near their childrens’ school and travel a little to work
e.g. Fairfield Methodist Primary School

There are several condos in the Dover Road area and the direct bus no. 196 would take about half an hour to get to SGH. It's probably faster to travel by MRT from Buona Vista station to Outram station.

"We were just planning on the public school system."

Two short statements of the obvious:

Coming in August is halfway through the school year here. This complicates entry into the public system which is highly competitive if the school is any good. At five, the younger will probably have to wait for the 2009 entry into the Primary school system. The local variety of kindergarten is available for him.

Secondly, there will be a degree of culture shock when your children enter the public schools/kindergarten. Not only will they find the Singlish a challenge, but the teaching culture, curriculum and methods are somewhat different to what they will have been used to. Everyone involved will need patience until they learn how to fit in. You may also have to consider private tuition to help them catch up in some of the subjects.
