Censorship policy

Postby jpatokal » Tue, 02 Dec 2003 12:00 am

Greetings,

I'm a expat-singapore.com site regular, but the heavy-handed censorship there is worse than reading the local politics page in the Straits Times. I'm thinking of making the switch to here -- so what is Singapore Expats' official position on censorship, and what do other readers have to say?

...and how come I just wrote expatsingapore.com and the link still goes there, but the link text says singaporeexpats...?

<It is due to our forum filter. I have edited your post. Please see explanation below - Pal>

Hi, welcome to our forum!

Sorry for the confusion about the links and text that you have posted. This is the work of a filter that will change certain URL to our website URL.

Initially, we do not have any filter for the forum. But due to some persistent spammers who posted invitations to their website (post repeatedly in alot of threads), thereafter, we activated the URL filter for certain sites.

Singapore Expats believe in freedom of speech for sharing of ideas and experience. But we do have our guidelines.

1. No spam
2. No racism remarks
3. No porngraphy or any contents deemed undesirable to minors
4. No insult or quarrel towards another member

Mean time, please register yourself and choose an avatar for your identity.

Please invite your friends who would like to chat here, as we might consider setting up a dedicated category/forum just for the regulars of expat singapore. Hope you will enjoy your stay here!

PS: We notice that once someone mention about SingaporeExpats.com in that forum, that post will be deleted very quickly! Although I do not see any conflict of interest, we respect their decision.

Political censorship

Postby jpatokal » Wed, 10 Dec 2003 12:01 pm

Well well, I tested out what would happen if I posted a few less than flattering comments about the beloved leadership of our fine island state, and unsurprisingly the message was swiftly deleted -- despite not meeting any of the 4 criteria listed above.

On the positive side, unlike The Other Site's silent disappearances in the night, I actually got a reasonable e-mail noting that sites run in Singapore, like this one, can't really go around prodding hornet nests without getting stung with a defamation suit. And liability here isn't limited just to the defaming poster (me!), but all accessories as well...

So maybe the management would care to delineate its own political OB markers? Remember, Singapore does have freedom of speech, you just have to be careful what you say...

Hi jpatokal,

We currently do not have any strict guidelines for political posts. But we advice our visitors to practice constraint on posting sensitive political issues. We discourage negative messages or defamating remarks against the Singapore government or political names. Being discreet about certain topic is always better than overly expressive.

Nevertheless, healthy discussions about pros and cons of government policy or new ruling will always be welcomed.
