Hello y'all!!! i need help big time!!
i will be travelling to singapore in april 2007... my tickets and other travel stuff are ready except there is no hotel reservation waiting for me there... see, i like budget travelling although i would also want a decent and presentable place to stay in... I want to know which are good areas/locations to stay in as well as which hotels look safe and decent. i am on a tight budget... hehehe... i will be there for 2 weeks...
please let me know which ones are good so i can narrow down my search:
Joo Chiat area
- Hotel(s) 81 Opera, Joo Chiat, Sakura or Classic
- The Fragrance Hotel
- Astro Hotel Singapore
Balestier Road
- Fragrance Hotel(s) Rose, Balestier or Classic
Hotel 81 Elegance (Foch Road)
Little India
- Asphodel Inn
- Tekka Boarding Service
- Tekka Hotel
A Traveller's Rest Stop (near Chinatown)
Penang Hotel (Jalan Besar / Lavender St.)
Please advise...
thanks so much!!!

Hi
What is the road penang hotel is located? Will take a look around it to view its exact location when I leave work today which is round the corner of that place and little india. Little india is better then Joo chiat or balestier I feel (personal). They are all interesting and colourful enviornment with nice food places around, but little india has the train pretty close by and not so for joo chiat.
hope it helps.

Hi mfhgarcia
Went pass the penang hotel you mentioned. Er you can forget it for that area is almost a dead town at night with couple of those night clubs that you can skip by.
There are some in little india nearer city and mustaffa (24 hours region of little india) that are amongst the more crowded region. Lots of back backer places there with pubs almost next to them. Can check it out later tonight to look out for some of the names. Checked out fernloft yet? Hotel 81 near bencoolen which is near lavender area (almost next to the singapore casket area) is a very quiet area at night (if you do not mind it). There is hotel 81 in the middle of china town. You can check that out. It is opposite yue hua next to train station.

Hey, mfhgarcia! Where did you find those hotels? Although I am not a local, I know some of them are famous for something else...emm...I wouldnt recommend those 'cheap' hotels to you. However, I dont know all of the hotels in your list, maybe some are not bad?
A nice budget hotel I can recommend to you is the New Seven-Storey Hotel which is located just outside of Bugis Junction. I never walked in but passed by many times when I worked nearby, it looked simple and clean. More important, it's in town, the location is ideal for shopping, dining and sight seeing.

Balestier Road sounds the best to me. Balestier Road is just a short strip and the hotel is located quite near the main road, which is brightly lit. It has also a lot of food and 24 hrs convenience shops which can be quite useful. Oh yes - importantly, it's about 7 minutes to Orchard Road!

Is it the one with the steamboat downstairs? Not sure when you mentioned
New Seven Storey.

A few of us have skirted round the subject but not been very explicit, which I think we need to be. A lot of Hotel 81s and I would think Fragrance Hotels too can be rented by the hour. There may well be a lot of men and hookers going back and forth so, if you want a good night's sleep, avoid them.
I live in Geylang and it always makes me smile, but sympathise, when I see obviously bewildered tourists wandering round near that wonderfully cheap hotel they found on the internet.

It actually depends on which branch of Hotel 81 you'd be staying in. There was a time I went for a short-training course in Singapore and all the big hotels were filled up since there were 7 international conventions happening around Singapore. So I just booked in Hotel 81 Chinatown. I know about some of the Hotel 81's reputation. All I wanted was hot water in the shower and a good bed to sleep in (I just needed a place to stay in the evenings). I got it. There's no sleazy atmosphere or anything. There were even families with kids staying in Hotel 81 Chinatown! It's just basic budget hotel. Don't expect a bathrobe or in-room dining.
I also had the chance to stay overnight in Hotel 81 Bugis when I extended one day after a training course so I can go around Singapore and see the museums. Hotel 81 Bugis was quiet. Of course, no frills or anything.
