Pre-MBA internship for career changer

Post by mho » Fri, 12 Jan 2007 11:03 pm

Hi,

I am an engineer with 6yrs telecom experience and I will be going to a top ranked US MBA program this fall.

I want to move into marketing role - brand management/market research(pref Qualitative) role on graduation.

I want to know there are any Pre-MBA internships through which I can show my commitment to the change and get some hands on experience before I start my MBA.

Any ideas?

Are you going to be at the BBQ on East Coast Park tomorrow, Jan 14? If you are, I can talk to you about it.

I did my MBA at a top 10/15 US school and can talk to you about the recruiting process there and whether a pre-MBA internship will add any value or not.

You're fortunate coz the MBA job market is pretty hot right now. Six figure salary jobs in the US are aplenty and since investment banking and strategy consulting recruiting picked up again after 2003-2004, opportunities in corporate leadership programs and marketing positions are abundant.

That said, if you are planning to land a brand management job in the US, you might be best served by trying to find a strategic marketing or product marketing assignment before you go. If you are planning to return to Asia, it might not be so critical.

It also depends on the school you are attending. If you're attending Columbia, Johnson (Cornell), Chicago, Stanford, you may want to get some experience in marketing versus if you're going to Kellogg.

There are several other factors to consider which are quite sensitive and I shall not discuss them here. If you are at the BBQ tmr, feel me to bring this up. I'll be glad to talk to you.

Cheers, Ron
