Gym types and locations
Hey everyone, I apologise for starting a new thread, I realise there are plenty on gyms and I have searched them, but they do not sufficiently satisfy my queries.
I have just moved to Singapore and am looking for an apartment right now. One of the 'must haves' I have given my real estate agent is close proximity to a gym. However, the agent really only knows about Club California and Fitness First. I've never trained at big fitness chains as I've always found excellent smaller gyms at less than half the price back home.
From the other forum threads, I gather there are the big chains, and the SSC gyms. The SSC membership price is more what I would expect to pay, as I don't need tvs, spinning classes etc as I'm only interested in resistance training.
Are there other smaller gyms like SSC that are worth investigating? How adequate are SSC gyms? Do they have free weights, reasonable floor space, or are they more like condo gyms? What kind of locations are they in?
Cheers.

As the opening isn't scheduled until 11 December 2006, it would mean that you are advertising your business. Please use the Classified section of this website and not the forum threads. (It's free)

The SSC gyms have older (or at least well-used) equipment, are located out in the suburbs and are often packed at peak periods. In a typically inane Singaporean bureaucratic rule to prevent camping students, they also have a silly rule about reading material not being allowed.
(MP3 players etc are OK.) The upside is that they're very cheap.
There are a couple of "excellent smaller gyms" in Sing (eg. BXG out in East Coast, the outfit in the Gallery Hotel), but in general they cost even more than the big boys...

Hi there, just be careful of pressure tactics in BOTH Planet Fitness & California Fitness. I had called Planet Fitness to enquire last week and was first told that it'll be cheaper if I signed for anything above 6 months. But I didnt want to commit as I have NEVER exercised in a gym and wasnt sure if Id like it. So the consultant advised me to sign on for a month for $50 (no time restrictions & I could sign up for any of their classes with no extra charges) and if I like it, I can sign on for a package or stick to $50 every month. I kept REPEATING $50 a month, he said "yes".
So we went down last Fri, only to be told that the $50 was applicable if we signed on for a 2year pkg!!!
Then they try to tell you its a 'miscommunication' and make you an offer of a "FREE" one week trial of their gym facilities (the free trial is for ANYONE, so its not like they are doing you anything special, you get a free trial when you call them over the phone)
California Fitness, DO NOT give them your number. They always tell you they will get a consultant to call you and then its never ending calls.
So its best to go down personally or say you'll call back

This is the last warning. I would have let it be if you hadn't have tried to flog it last week as well and had already been warned.

Listen Peter, You are flogging either you or your bosses fitness centre. That constitutes Advertising in the Threads. If a centre has just opened how is one able to recommend it as it has no history. What you are doing is advertising. This is my last warning. Advertise it for free in the Classifieds or risk having your nick locked here.

SMS, aren't you overreacting a little here? The original poster asked about fitness centres, so he replied about a fitness centre -- seems perfectly on-topic if you ask me.

Because you've stumbled on a gray area of policy. The moderators have convened a conclave and are currently stroking their long, luxurious beards and saying "Hmm" in grave tones a lot; watch out for the puff of white smoke that will inform the masses that they have reached a conclusion.OPT wrote:why don't you post your comments here?
