Nursing or pharm jobs in Singapore

Post by janabanana » Wed, 22 Nov 2006 5:18 pm

Hi! I've moved to Singapore with my husband and his job but I want to work too! I am a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in science and background working seven years in intensive care and one year in pharmaceutical research. I feel that I have lots of great experience but no one seems to have positions?!
I'm starting to feel desperate for work. I'm bored!!! Anyone have any ideas?

If you are here on a Dependent's pass, you shouldn't have too much of a problem as all the employer would need to do it get a "Letter of Consent" from MOM to employ you. You did not indicate where your degree is from so I don't know if the school is an recognized school by Singapore Standards.

People keep saying, "you shouldn't have any problems." To the person that responded, I have a degree in science (ie: same as a doctor before they attend medical school). It's actually a higher level of education than most nurses have in Singapore since they just started offering a degree program (again translation: 4-year unniversity degree) here.
I am on a dependant pass and we're going to apply for PR after being here for 6 months, luckily my husband makes a good salary (>13000/month) so I think we will not have too many problems with that but I still want a job for me!
I'm frustrated!

janabanana,

I am sorry you are frustrated. I know how it is as I've been here 24 years. Even with the time in grade I spend most of '04 and half of '05 unemployed even with qualifications. It happens, sorry to say.

As you have indicated, you are a Registered Nurse (where are you registered and is that registration recognized here?). I do know there was something published recently (3 or 4 months ago) about phasing out foreign nurses due to the recent school to which you referred. This may be the cause but I don't see how that would affect your chances of maybe returning to pharmaceutical research.

Again, you have not indicated "where" you went to school or whether or not Singapore recognizes the degree as a Nursing Degree. Have you tried calling MOM for clarification? This may well be the bone of contention. Especially so if Singapore has changed the minimum requirements for practicing here.

Or are your salary requirements out of line with the local salary scale? Only a thought.........
