Advice needed from computer professionals working in SG

Post by codefire » Sun, 12 Nov 2006 9:30 pm

Hi,

Some background...I am a Technical Writer specialising in software here in the UK. I have over 10 years experience and have worked as a documentation and training manager for 7 years. I have a Masters degree in Information Systems Engineering.

I am considering the move to Singapore and the one aspect I don't have any feel for is what is the *real* job situation for IT professionals on the ground there? I believe I can get an EPEC fairly easily. I also qualify for an Employment Pass based on the online self-assessment.

I've been checking the job agencies and most have vacancies for Technical Writers in software...but just how easy is it to get a job there if you don't speak Chinese? Has the emphasis moved away from employing professional foreigners to use local labour?

I would be very interested to hear people's views on the SG job market for IT professionals, and especially how they see things changing in 2007.

Thanks a lot,
Tony

It's the same as it usually is... Lots of entry-level jobs for fresh grads, but the higher-up jobs are tougher.

With your qualifications, you could definitely get a job as a technical writer (and the technical documents are usually in english).

But the pay won't be outstanding, and your education and experience could also turn away a lot of employers who think you're overqualified.

Yep, sounds about right. From what I've seen so far I probably could get "something", but the pay would be quite a bit less than I'm getting in the UK, which is one factor which I would have to balance against a possible improvement in lifestyle. Thanks for the advice.
