Getting around Singapore with 3 year old

Post by nick.wakefield » Tue, 07 Nov 2006 7:59 am

Hi, My husband and I are moving to Singapore in January. We live in NZ and getting around with a 3yr old is easy - strap her into her car seat and jump in the car. Load the buggy into the boot if needed.

We won't have a car in Singapore, and I realise we'll be using public transport. Our buggy is quite heavy and it won't be practical to lug it around on buses, trains and taxis with me.

Firstly, does anyone have any ideas - can I pick up a lightweight buggy that may be can be slung over my shoulder when not in use? I'll be in Singapore at the end of November to have a look for apartments and thought I might be able to buy something like this at that time.

Secondly, car seats are compulsory here - what is the situation in Singapore? Do some taxis have child car seats?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks everyone for answering this. I have looked at strollers in NZ and the lightest I can find is 3.5 kilos. I will have a look when we are over at the end of this month, so if anyone knows a good shop with strollers please let me know the name and address. Thank you.

To answer your question:

Taxis don't have child car seats. Child restrain is compulsory, but you'll see a lot of locals not using them.
For taxi trips I know some parents use a "Joey Safe", basically it's a strap/ harness kinda thing.

Yup you can find the lightweight buggy here. I think the lightweight is so great for MRTs, buses, taxis and moving around. You can look at the shops when you're here in November.

Good luck!

If you want a stroller, you can buy a lightweight stroller here, but it may be more expensive than in NZ...some baby/child products are very pricey here.

We bought ours before leaving Australia and used it on the flight (and every other flight since until he grew out of it). Test them all at the shop, only buy a good quality, easy folding, easy carrying one, if you do it will last you well. It may cost you more but you will be thankful you did.

You will definitely need some form of restraint for taxis that is portable like the joey safe etc. if you don't want your child rolling around the back of a taxi here.

Take a good quality buggy with you.

Not all will honour warranty here, even though manufacturers of buggies do give a normal year. but getting it sorted can be a nightmare, customer service leaves much to be desired, but i do see improvements this year, after i took my suitcase back for repair, and i didn't have the receipt!

I did actually thank her and said i would recommend the shop! Kovan hub second floor suitcase shop! No I don't have shares in it! :P

Hi there,
I saw your post about wanting a lightweight stroller. I bought the Mclaren lightweight stroller about a year ago and very rarely used it as my daughter prefered to walk. I am happy to give it to you at a good price, I know they are expensive new, and mine is hardly used, with a shoulder strap too, in good condition. Would not really know what to ask for it either, but it is in good condition.
Let me know if you would be interested as it is sitting at home collecting dust.
Pls email me if interested at: [email protected]
Tks Stephanie

I am also a kiwi with a thre year old and an owner of a lightweight mclaren stroller.
There are lighter strollers on the market but the mclaren is great, sturdy.

Please feel free to send me a personal mail , I am very good at answer kiwi questions
