Looking for someone who has lived in Jakarta...

Post by Em Eye » Mon, 16 Oct 2006 1:48 pm

My partner has just been offered a position in Jakarta. I'm looking for someone who can answer my questions about being an expat in Jakarta. (I'm from Australia)

Can I help you? What is that you want to know?
We moved from Jakarta 6 months ago.

I guess it's like any other expat posting, either you like it or not.

Hi I worked there for 1.5 years though I am not an expat :D

Just a suggestion: google the Jakarta expat websites - there are at least a couple that I know of, and you can probably get a lot of useful insight there.

Not to mince my words too much, but Jakarta is a dump -- kind of like Bangkok, only more crime, worse traffic jams and without the tourist infrastructure. The upside is that as a moneyed expat, you can mostly (but not entirely) insulate yourself from the wretchedness of the masses.

:( I don't really like any indonesian cities, except those with historical significance.

Oh, Jakarta has plenty of history, only problem is that it's mostly massacres and nicknames like "The White Man's Graveyard", and it's damned hard to find any of it even if you look.
