Requirements

Post by jgirl » Tue, 05 Sep 2006 9:18 pm

Hi all, I went for SIA cabin crew interview and was rejected even before I had a chance to went in for the intervew due to my height. I'm 1.56 and the minimum height requirement is 1.58. But I am really interested in being a cabin crew. Are there any other airlines that I can try? For the arm reach requirment, I tried reaching for 2.2m and I could. Do U all know which airlines test u on armreach instead of just measuring just your height to determine ur entry?thanks all.

Yup exactly. During the Emirates interview we were simply asked to reach for a mark on the wall. No height measurement. I guess it was slightly more than 2.15m. It's amazing that you can reach 2.2m! Why not give it a try at the next Emirates' interview :)

In my opinion, I will only join SIA cos is my national carrier.
Will not join any other airlines like Emirates, etc even if i am not selected by SQ. Can't imagine myself being based in Dubai, gonna be a sad & miserable life for me when my family & friends are here in Singagpore.
I aways have this concept that girls join other airlines cos they cant get into SQ, then no choice got to settle for the rest.
No offence intended to those planning to join other airlines.
If i'm not wrong, Silkair stewardesses are there with Silkair cos SQ rejected them.
Pls correct me if i'm wrong, perhaps existing or ex SIA stewardessess can enlighten me on that.

Wow, just because you are SQ-crazy, don't go around tarnishing others! MI has equally good FSS, some are even ex-SQ who went back flying part time. You're 19, young and full of ideas. Some people are dying to try living overseas rather than Singapore so they try other airlines. Some settle because they don't care which airline it is as long as it's an airline. The job scope is the same, but the intricacies and the level of service delivery is different.

Good luck!

Nikki, i'm truely mad when you mention silkair gals only join silkair because they can't join sia. IKt's true like what toygirl has mentioned, there are many ex-sia gals who joined silkair and many others who preferred to join other airlines, be it for experience or exposure to other cultures. Many people have the misconception that sia is the best and so everyone just practically flocked in to join sia. If you've done some research on your own or in fact ask some experienced sia gals, you would realise that they are not that fantastic that they seemed. I'm with silkair now but am not speaking for silkair just because i'm there. In my batch, only one gal had attempted to join sia while 19 of us had wanted to join silkair instead. Mind you, all of us have either degree or diploma qualifications. Firstly, i personally believe silkair has a higher service level and later confirmed my beliefs with HR's feedback. Also, if you have been reading the news for the past years, you would know that sia's service level has been dropping while silkair is always consistently been the best regional airline voted for years. Secondly, there's no fixed requirements to wear particular brand makeup or particular colour eyeshadow etc. Thirdly, if you do go to the airport, please take a look at sia gals and silkair gals, you would in fact realise that silkair gals are much more prettier. Lastly, the culture in silkair is friendlier, less political than in sia, crew who's more approachable and cohesive.

For the other airlines, i truely believe there are many others who join them for personal reasons and not like what you mention; just because they can't join sia. Please do not make such irresponsible and insensitive remarks. That only shows how narrow-minded you are.

I agree with the first statement..I have always loved SIA..

I have a question though..Why do Emirates judge you by how long you can stretch your arm but SIA looks for the height??Those with Long arms stand a preety good chance then if trying for Emirates..
In order to receive, you have to believe that you have received. (The Secret)

Yes, this is the question i've been asking. The reason for the minimum height requirment is to head the overhead compartments to assist passengers with baggages isn't it? Wat other reaons are there? That u must be of a certain height, just like modelling? I dont know, not that I am 'sourgraping', but i feel that it is really unfair to determine whether u are given a chance for interview jus based on that 2cm i'm lacking off

You do have to be of a certain height to be able to reach and close the overhead compartments and you need to help shorter pax to stow the baggages in there too.

What toygirl and ssemaj said are true. I once dreamt of becoming a Singapore Girl (that explains the nick) but that dream is trashed out after I've started working at the airport. Most of the FSSs aren't that good-looking, arrogant, and even not professional at all. Mind you, I'm not talking about them in general. Yes, there are some who are very hospitable not only to pax but to ground staff as well. I've built a good rapport with these bunch and some even remember me. As mentioned, it's true that SIA's service quality has gone down and SilkAir's has gone up (and I'm proud to be joining them soon). Don't believe? Take a look at these links:

Its true that Silkair's crew are prettier. The girls carry themselves with poise and elegance(too Miss Universe ah..Hehe). Thats the way to maintain the identity even though you're not in duty. But of course, to me, it's still Emirates that is the best. =)

babe, watch it.. hehe :x you got everything wrong.
Emirates is paying ALOT higher than SQ. Mind you that SQ service have gone down. The stewardess aren't that 100% at all.

There are several purposes why some go to Silkair. Such as, they are married and want to be home with their family. Some of them are not mentally prepared for the lay-overs [INCLUDING ME!].
Did I also mentioned that some SQ stewardess when in to Emirates?
Mind Nikki explaining to me why is that?

I still don't get it about "someone's mentality". It seems that if you got thru SQ you're a Queen of the world already and everyone salute you. But then NO, every stewardess in any airline do have the same job scope but of course the pay are different from the rest.

I guess Nikki needs to know that no matter which airline you are at, if you're a crew and thats your job and be proud of it.

Well for me, I dont care which airline I go to, cos its the job scope of a flight attendant that interest me. Really like to work n interact w pple internationally n get to fly to places all e time. I feel that all the diff airlines are jus like schools with different uniforms. Some pple go to SIA mayb cos of its attractive uniform? I dont know, don wanna stereotype everyone cos it could be quite subjective for every individual. But personally I'd be happy if i'm given a job I that I like doing. Too bad, i am 2 cm away frm most cabin crew height requirment, 2 cm frm my dream.
 :(
