Feeding 14 month old while travelling

Post by mama77 » Thu, 24 Aug 2006 1:28 pm

Hi, I know this may sound like a really stupid question, but I just need someone's opinion.

I'll be flying with my 14 month old son on a 14 hour flight and I'm not too sure what to give him to eat.

He's not too keen on jar food, and I also find that they don't fill up. Should I take a packet of cereal with me, and some bread rolls?

He'll have his own seat, so they'll be offering him airline food. Would it be wise to give him this, or do you think it'll be too salty or have too many preservatives? would you give your child airline food at 14 months?

He's my first child so haven't got much experience with all of this.

What do you feed your kids when travelling?

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I always took a little supply of whatever their favourite food was (even sandwiches) at the time, including fruit etc, whatever they hadn't eaten got thrown out at the end of the trip.

well, my kids have been travelling with us since they were 3 months old and i always pack cereal, biscuits, bread, crackers and milk. i guess it is alright to skip a proper meal for that trip.

actually the kid meals are pretty good. there are bread, cookies, milk or juice, fruits. if your kid dislike jar food, pls inform the airline in advance of your perference. ask for kid meal. kinda hard to tell if it is too salty or has too much perservatives.

anyway, have a good trip.

Kids meals aren't too bad on the flights I've been on but they do tend to have quite a few sugary "extras" that i try to grab and hide before my children see them. As always they are packaged in such a way that it is the first thing your kid sees....then they scream murder because they can't understand why they can't have "Kit Kats" for lunch.

With my twins, I packed little bite size sandwiches, crackers, and cut up fruit to have on standby in case they didn't like the airline meal.
I also made sure their water bottle was full as well to keep them hydrated.

When my youngest was 18 months old, I did the same but found that she wouldn't eat anything I or the airline prepared and preferred to munch on my husband and my meals instead.

So as the others have suggested, perhaps have a few favourite things on standby and just wait and see.

I think the more difficult task is keeping them occupied at that age. I tell you sometimes I've felt like I have actually walked to my destination as they just never sit still :-)

I remember just recently having the opportunity to travel "childless" on a long haul flight. I didn't care where I sat. Window, aisle, middle, I was just excited that I was travelling without having 3 kids to worry about and amuse.
Then I got to my seat......and I was surrounded by them!

"Any drinks Madam?"

"Oh yeah!"

Good luck
