What's your budget? Flying on Silk Air is by far the easiest option. I found Langkawi a rather boring place, but if all you need is a beach then you could do worse... and the tax-free booze is remarkably cheap

Why going by bus, flying is not that expensive...

These sites give you some idea:

I did not find Langkawi boring, but yes, it is very quiet.

We stayed in Mutiara Burau Bay resort (pic 2 and 3) - no luxury, but nice, I loved its location. Next to it is Berjaya resort, if you want more comfort. For white beaches, you need to go to other places - there are some on north and some on south, but they are more 'touristy'. Burau Bay felt somewhat secluded.

Langkawi is great for nature lovers, not so much for night life lovers.
A cable car ride is a must, lovely views (pic 1).
I thoroughly enjoyed a mangrove tour including dinner on a fish farm (not really farm as one imagines it - see the lat pic) - we hired a boat on one of the beaches, saw mangroves, caves, eagle feeding and at the end had a fantastic dinner.
We rented a car and drove around the island - 2-3 days - driving around there is absolutely no problem, very very low traffic.
