Contemplating a move to Singapore

Post by Big Tex » Tue, 15 Aug 2006 11:01 pm

Hi everyone,

My company has just offered me a position in Singapore for a minimum stay of 2 years, with a possible extension depending on business conditions. My wife and I currently live in Houston, Texas, and this might be a pretty good career move for me. We're both in our late 20's, and don't have any kids, so it's a good time to get in a little bit of travel.

The problem is, the old lady also currently holds down a job as a software engineer, and her pay is in the US$80's, which is pretty reasonable. How hard is it for a foreigner to land a job in Singapore in the technical industry? Do they even interview foreigners? How much do software engineers usually make? She has a bachelor's degree in Elect. Eng. from a top rate college here in the US, with 5 years of work experience at a large multinational. It would be a pity if she had to give up her career and mope around the house for a couple of years.

Speaking of houses, I've read that housing is pretty steep in Singapore. We don't mind living in the suburbs, as long as it isn't too far in the boonies, so would prices be more reasonble there? We're probably looking for a 2 bed-2 bath apartment, without noisy neighbors, nothing fancy. It definitely has to have A/C though.

I'd appreciate any help/advice that comes my way. Thanks!
